Govt to help Bankura farmers take up alternate crop cultivation

first_imgKolkata: The state government has made plans to help farmers in taking up cultivation of pulses, oil seeds and mustard in 196 mouzas of Bankura district, where paddy cultivation has suffered due to inadequate rainfall.”The rainfall has not been upto the mark, which has affected paddy cultivation in parts of Bankura district. Farmers have cultivated paddy but it could not yield edible rice. So, we are encouraging alternative cultivation of those crops which can be grown with the use of less water,” said Subhasis Batabyal, vice-chairman of West Bengal Agro Industries Corporation Ltd. The farmers are also being encouraged to cultivate different varieties of saag, like palang and others. The advantage of cultivating saag lies in the fact that it can be grown using less water and also at a rapid pace. The winter has already set in and saag is very much in demand,” Batabyal added. The state Agriculture and Horticulture department is extending all possible help to the farmers by distributing seeds among them and also providing necessary advice for cultivation. Fertiliser is also being made available for the benefit of the farmers. “Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has always laid special emphasis on the improvement of income of farmers and various steps are being taken from time-to-time in this regard,” a senior official of the state Agriculture department said. Necessary instructions have been given to the concerned officers of the district level, to arrange facilities for power connections for submersible and mini-pumps that will be used to channel water from the waterbodies into the agricultural fields.last_img
