Backtoschool safety reminder

A new school year begins next week and police know children will be excited and distracted. That’s why police say it is important for parents to take a few minutes this holiday weekend to remind children of the importance of road safety and watching out for vehicles.Const. Ed Sanchuk, spokesperson for the Norfolk OPP, shared the following talking points this week:Cyclists under the age of 18 are required, by law, to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet. Cyclists must obey the same rules of the road that other vehicles do. Always keep your eyes and ears open as sometimes drivers may not see you. Pedestrians should stay on the sidewalk wherever possible. Where there are none, pedestrians should walk on the left side of the road on the shoulder facing traffic. Both pedestrians and cyclists should take advantage of crosswalks that have crossing guards. They too will be returning to their posts next week. Drivers are reminded that traffic volumes will increase next week and that bus routes may affect commute times. Sanchuk reminds motorists that registered owners of a vehicle can be charged if that vehicle is identified as one that fails to stop for a school bus when its overhead red signal lights are flashing.
