But Cal State Fullerton, which is about 16 miles southeast of Santa Fe Springs, offered the best accommodations, Oviedo said. At Cerritos, graduates were allowed 10 guests apiece. At Whittier High, that number would have dropped to a maximum of two or three guests. Whittier College normally hosts La Serna High School’s graduation, and officials there did not want to host another ceremony. La Mirada High, meanwhile, would not have been able to accommodate graduation parking, Oviedo said. “\ certainly was a concern, but we talked with our seniors and their families and, so far, we haven’t heard that transportation or the distance is going to be a challenge,” Oviedo said. Senior Joe Hernandez, 17, agreed, saying most of his family is just looking forward to watching him cross the commencement stage. SANTA FE SPRINGS – Friends and families of this year’s Santa Fe High School graduating seniors will have to travel much farther than usual to watch their favorite students receive diplomas. The school, which has no stadium, will for the first time hold its graduation ceremony at Cal State Fullerton, 800 N. State College Blvd., rather than at nearby Cerritos College. Because Cerritos College is undergoing construction, Santa Fe Principal Monica Oviedo said officials were forced to look elsewhere for a venue for this year’s commencement ceremony, which takes place at 6 p.m. June 21. “It was the closest place we could find that would accommodate our students and their families,” Oviedo said. “Right now, we have 515 graduates and they will be allowed six guests per graduate.” “I don’t mind it, as long as there’s room for everyone else,” Hernandez said. “We get only six tickets, and I’m going to need more than that, but it shouldn’t be a big problem. In the end, I think it’ll be worth it.” tracy.garcia@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
