The Epic of Gilgamesh – Historys Oldest Great Work of Literature

The Epic of Gilgamesh – Historys Oldest Great Work of Literature

first_imgIn 1853, a great discovery was at the site of ancient Nineveh in modern-day Iraq, near Mosul. A team of British and Assyrian archaeologists uncovered a series of stone tablets, engraved in the Akkadian language, and dated to 1300-1000 BC. On these tablets is perhaps the oldest recorded narrative known to man. Since 1853, older versions of the story have been found, written perhaps 3,000 years ago in Sumerian — showing that the story had survived the downfall of one empire and the rise of another, and had continued in popularity across cultures. This is the “Epic of Gilgamesh”, a story which in many ways laid the foundations of the “buddy” story, and may have been the inspiration behind Homer’s “Iliad”, written hundreds of years later in Greece.Neo-Assyrian clay tablet. Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet 11.The story follows Gilgamesh, a young and handsome Uruk. Gilgamesh was the son of Ninsun, a goddess, and Lugalbanda, a priest-king. Wanting for nothing, he grew up spoiled, arrogant and cruel. He spends his time beating the other men of Uruk in fights and taking many women to bed, including the wives of other men – as royalty and the son of a goddess, he feels he is entitled. The people of Uruk, terrorized by Gilgamesh, and unable to do anything because of his royal and divine status, cry out to the king of heaven, Anu, to help them with the young king. The Parthian Temple of the Gareus at Uruk (Warka), 39 km east of Samawah, Iraq, was built before 110 AD and is thus thousands of years younger than the surrounding Sumerian remains. Photo by David Stanley CC BY 2.0In response, the gods send Enkidu, a wild man who lives in the desert, to Uruk. Enkidu lives in the wilds, side by side with the animals when he encounters a priestess named Shamhat, who partially civilized him – she teaches him how to eat like a human being. Enkidu then heads to Uruk. There, he meets Gilgamesh and challenges him to a fight. They fight day and night, but eventually Gilgamesh wins. However, in the process, he begins to learn humility and becomes best friends with Enkidu.Possible representation of Gilgamesh as Master of Animals, grasping a lion in his left arm and snake in his right hand, in an Assyrian palace relief, from Dur-Sharrukin, now held in the Louvre. The pair then decide to go on a great adventure. First, they go to the “Forest of Cedar” (which may be today’s Lebanon, known for its cedar trees), and fight the monster Humbaba, which the gods have set over the forest. They then encounter Ishtar, the goddess of love, war and sex, and who reputedly can seduce any man alive – but not Gilgamesh, who rejects her advances.Fragment of a stone plaque from the temple of Inanna at Nippur showing a Sumerian goddess, possibly Inanna (c. 2500 BC). Photo by Wolfgang Sauber CC BY-SA 3.0This angers the goddess, who then asks a fellow deity to release the mighty “Bull of Heaven” so it can attack and kill Gilgamesh. This he does, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu team up and kill the Bull after a mighty struggle. This angers all of the gods, for the Bull is their mightiest creature, and as punishment, they cause Enkidu to die of the injuries sustained in the fight. Gilgamesh almost dies of grief at the loss of his friend. This relief decorated the lower course of the exterior wall of the temple palace of King Kapara. Two heroes pin down a bearded foe, while grabbing at his pronged headdress. The context may be related to the Gilgamesh epic, and display Gilgamesh and Enkidu in their fight with Humbaba. The death of Enkidu not only wounds Gilgamesh but causes him to worry about his own immortality. He begins a search to find the secret of eternal life.He looks for a man named Utnapishtim, who is reputed to be immortal, and survived a great flood which overtook the world many years before. After much searching, Gilgamesh finds Utnapishtim, who tells the future king that he must accept his mortality, which he does. Gilgamesh then returns to Uruk, where he rules as a good and wise king for 126 years. This small 11 x 9.5 x 3 cm clay tablet is a fragment of tablet V of the Epic of Gilgamesh. It narrates how Gilgamesh and Enkidu entered the Cedar Forest and killed Humbaba and his seven sons. Photo by Osama Shukir Muhammed Amin FRCP(Glasg) CC BY-SA 4.0It seems there really was a Gilgamesh, as other archaeological finds in the form of letters and inscriptions indicate. He must have been an outstanding personality, for archaeologists believe this king is the basis of the epic tale.Gilgamesh is not just a story about a king. It is one of the first times that human beings recorded some of the great themes of human life and literature. Friendship, hatred, the fear of death and the search for everlasting life, the relationship of humans to the gods, the relationship between male and female, city versus rural life, the value of humility, the cost of arrogance and much more. The adventures and hardship that Gilgamesh endures in the story serve to change him and make him a wiser man so that he might be a good king, a theme which has existed for centuries – Gilgamesh may have been the first.Akkadian cylinder seal impression from Girsu (c. 2340 – 2150 BC) showing a mythological scene. The figure in the center appears to be a god, perhaps Gilgamesh, who is bending the trunk of a tree into a curve as he chops it down. Underneath the tree, a god ascending from the Underworld hands a mace-like object to a goddess. Photo by Applejuice CC BY-SA 4.0Many historians believe that the Utnapishtim story in the epic was a forerunner of the Flood of the Old Testament, and even many Biblical scholars agree that the Noah narrative and Gilgamesh likely recount the same event – a tremendous flood in Mesopotamia. There are other similarities between Gilgamesh and stories in the Bible. Firstly, in both the Epic and in Ecclesiastes, the advice “a triple-stranded rope is not easily broken” is found in both books. In the Epic, Enkidu is created by the gods out of the soil in the wild. Shamhat not only offers the wild man food and teaches Enkidu how to eat, but tempts him sexually.Uruk Photo by Osama alqasab CC BY-SA 4.0Enkidu resists her advances, realizes his nakedness, and is expelled from the wild, much like the biblical Adam. There is also a snake in the Epic which later steals the secret of immortality (in the form of a plant) from Gilgamesh. In other parts of the tale, a goddess was created from the rib of the god Enki, god of creation. One scholar believes that King Nebuchadnezzar’s madness in the Bible’s story of Daniel was inspired by the story of Enkidu, the wild man. Many historians believe that the Epic of Gilgamesh had an influence on the Greek author Homer. They see similarities in the tragedies of the Iliad and the journeys of the Odyssey to the Epic of Gilgamesh.Read another story from us: Statuette Kept in a Margarine Tub for Years Turns out to be Ancient Roman ArtifactThe story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu even made its way into the 20th century. In an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Picard relates the story of Gilgamesh and Enkidu to an alien captain as a way of relating to the quest they find themselves on together.last_img read more

Pink Floyd in the Empty Ruins of Pompeii – Rocks Weirdest Live

Pink Floyd in the Empty Ruins of Pompeii – Rocks Weirdest Live

first_imgPink Floyd and their legendary performance at Pompeii was one for the ages. Anyone going to a rock gig will agree that the venue can make a big difference to the atmosphere. Outdoor arenas are becoming more and more popular, but some bands have chosen to play in very unusual locations. One of the strangest must be Pink Floyd’s live set in the amphitheater at the ancient site of Pompeii, which became the basis of the film, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. The irony of the title was not missed by director Adrian Maben who said in an interview with Storm Thorgerson on the website Braindead.com that one of the things that appealed to him about the project was the idea of the “pleasant contradiction to play live in a place that is dead.”Pink Floyd live at PompeiiThere were no tickets available for the gig as it was filmed as part of a rock documentary. The band played to a select audience consisting of the film crew, a few kids who had managed to sneak in and of course the former inhabitants of Pompeii, long since turned to stone by the volcanic ash – who were presumably into rock. The idea to film in the amphitheater came about by chance. Film director Adrian Maben had been visiting the ancient site on a trip to Italy in summer 1971.Pompeii amphitheater. Photo by Immanuel Giel CC BY-SA 3.0After a visit to Pompeii, he realized he had lost his passport. He returned later to the site hoping to find it there. Arriving at the ancient ruin of the amphitheatre, which at this time was deserted, it occurred to him that this would be a great place to film a rock band. Maben had been trying to persuade Pink Floyd’s manager Steve O’Rourke to let him make a film combining art and the band’s music, but so far, his ideas had been rejected. This idea met with more success. Not only did Maben get O’Rourke to agree, but he also got assistance from an Italian professor. The professor, who happened to be a big Pink Floyd fan persuaded the authorities to close the site to allow filming to take place.Pink Floyd performing the second part of “Echoes” at Pompeii. The performance was to be set up technically like a live gig, so the band brought all their usual touring gear along. This had to be loaded onto a truck and brought from London — a journey of three days. The crew were pleased to discover that the acoustics in the amphitheater were good and enhanced the sound. But this should not be surprising as the arena was built for thousands of spectators to watch unamplified performances. There were, of course, a few technical problems to contend with. The power supply was not up to dealing with all the electronic equipment required for the recording. Fortunately, the local town hall allowed them to run a cable to the amphitheater to boost the supply.Pink Floyd performing live at Pompeii. Photo by Timothy Honiss59 CC BY-SA 4.0Over four days from 4-7 October, the band performed a mixture of their better-known songs along with new material from their latest album “Meddle”.Although it was not a public gig, a few of the local children managed to sneak in and get to hear an exclusive free performance from one of the biggest rock bands of the period. Footage from Pompeii was supplemented by extra material recorded in Paris. This was overlaid with images of Italian waterfalls and the mosaics at Pompeii. They also added an additional voice thanks to a circus dog called Nobs who provides some atmospheric howling on one of the tracks. The premiere was screened at the Edinburgh film festival in 1972 and received mostly good reviews. The London premiere was less successful. This was planned to take place at the Rainbow Theater but was cancelled by the theatre owners Rank Standard as is was deemed to be in competition with other venues also owned by Rank. In addition to that, the film had not yet received certification from the Board of Censors. This left more than 3,000 fans disappointed. The original version of the film lasted only an hour which made it too short for a stand-alone screening. Maben later hit on the idea of including additional footage of the band in their spare time eating and chatting in the studio cafeteria which he felt would give fans some of the essence of the band beyond their music.Related Article: Crazy Diamond: Syd Barrett, Loads of LSD, and the Founding of Pink FloydIn 2003 the Director’s Cut was released. This version included more of the material filmed in Paris showing a much more candid side of the band as they relaxed, smoked and ate oysters at the Parisian Recording Studio. The financial success of the film is debatable. While Maben claims it was a financial success, others have disagreed. But the film itself is a remarkable piece of rock history and documentary which clearly still holds a fascination for fans today.last_img read more

Antonio Brown is the latest example of why star receivers are more

first_imgEach family is different. Some are loud and boisterous, some are reserved and quiet. In the NFL, the Patriots are the reserved family and the Steelers are the loud, boisterous family. The two organizations and head coaches have different approaches, but both have been successful. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s always play with emotion, but sometimes aren’t as tight with the details.Bill Belichick is all about the details, but the Patriots have a corporate atmosphere. Colin prefers the Patriot way because although it might be stuffy, there are fewer distraction like Pittsburgh is dealing with right now with the Antonio Brown mess.“The Patriots are fundamentally academic. Fairly rigid.  No one outside of a quarterback is worth that money. Very IBM. Very understated. Even the uniforms.Pittsburgh’s the opposite. They’re loud. Boisterous. Emotion driven. Lots of opinions. Often holding press conferences to talk about the distraction in the locker room. Now, I prefer New England, but that’s kind of because that’s the kind of like the family I was raised in.”The Antonio Brown Facebook dilemma has only cemented Colin’s belief that star wide receivers are more headache than they’re worth. The Brown incident follows the Odell Beckham boat trip controversy as the latest incident involving a star wide receiver that has created a distraction for their team heading into the playoffs.“We massively overvalue the importance of WR’s.They’re not the cake, they’re the icing, and best served with a thin layer. The Major League Baseball announces its Hall of Fame inductees today, renewing the yearly debate if players who are suspected of using steroids should be allowed into the Hall.Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens headline the list of suspected users up for induction. Both are unquestionably Hall of Fame talents, and both are suspected of using PED’s during their career. Colin said that the Mitchell Report, which outed steroid use in baseball, was a random sampling of anecdotal players who used steroids, it’s unclear who all used steroids and who was clean.Colin believes that without being able to definitively determine whom the users were, the best thing to do is to induct players, even those suspected of using, into the Hall of Fame, based on their career numbers alone. Great players used steroids. Some of them are already in the Hall of Fame.“I have always said I would let all these steroid users in the Hall of Fame, because I don’t have a complete list. And if I don’t have a complete list, I’m just going to go on numbers. I’m not going to keep someone out of the Hall of Fame just because they showed up on a list.”Guests:Josh Norman – Washington Redskins Pro Bowl cornerback is in-studio to explain what makes Aaron Rodgers so great; what separates him from other elite quarterbacks; the difference between covering Odell Beckham and Julio Jones from a trash talking standpoint; why he thinks Jones is the top wide receiver in the NFL; and why he doesn’t consider himself a trash talker.Zach Banner – USC Offensive lineman and former Fox Sports intern talks about USC’s comeback season; what changed after the Alabama game; what makes Sam Darnold special; if he loves football; and how he is approaching the draft and becoming an NFL player.Eric Mangini – Former Browns and Jets head coach joins the show to give his take on Chip Kelly as the Jacksonville offensive coordinator; why he thinks the Cowboys shouldn’t get rid of Tony Romo; and takes the audience inside Aaron Rodgers clutch throw against the Cowboys in How it Works.Daniel Cormier – UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and Fox Sports MMA analyst is in-studio to talk about a potential return to the ring to fight Jon jones; why he would fight him regardless if he was using performance enhancing drugs; why the fight means so much to him; and if he thinks a Mayweather/McGregor fight could actually happen.last_img read more

Need Help Retaining Employees Some Apps for That

first_img Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Recognizing an employee for a job well done can be a big morale booster and doesn’t have to cost a lot. These days, you can choose from a variety of low-cost web-based rewards-and-recognition programs to give employees a public shout out.The best part: These apps are based on the same kind of social sharing that make Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest popular, which means employees pick up on how to use them fairly quickly, and they’re fun. And while you’re recognizing someone for going above and beyond, they can share their accomplishment with other employees, and in some cases family and friends, making them look good — and you too.Getting staff to feel good about what they do and where they work pays off, according to a recent employee engagement survey from Aon Hewitt, a human-resources consulting firm based in Lincolnshire, Ill. As the economy improves, it is likely to get harder to hold on to top talent. Smart organizations will find out what matters most to workers and find ways to provide it, it says. One way companies are improving employee engagement is by singling workers out for their accomplishments more often — in some cases on a daily or weekly basis — and encouraging other staff to do likewise, and be public with their praise. The popularity of big social networks such as Facebook and Twitter has pushed long-time vendors of rewards-and-recognition programs to incorporate their own social-media platforms into what they offer, and lured startups into the business. Because many entry-level versions of these social sharing apps cost nothing or next to it, businesses of all sizes in all kinds of industries can, and are, using them, including companies in everything from pharmaceuticals to retail.Related: How to Attract — And Retain — Staff When You Can’t Pay Big BucksMany of these services can be used as desktop or smartphone apps. 5 Ways How to Use Urgency When You Want to Inspire Conversions

5 Ways How to Use Urgency When You Want to Inspire Conversions

first_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. May 22, 2018 Register Now » Every website owner’s dream is to speed up the process of getting people to convert. If you’re one of those website owners, you’re probably already trying to get people right now to take action, whether that be to subscribe to a newsletter or make an online purchase.Related: 7 Easy Ways to Win More Conversions on Social MediaThough visitors hardly go to a website, immediately see what they want, then just as immediately make a purchase — every single time — you can nudge this process along by creating a sense of urgency to get those visitors to convert. And, it just so happens there are a number of ways to do that:1. Run limited-time sales. If people come to your website and see a great deal that’s available only for a limited time, they’ll feel pressured to get in on the offer so they don’t miss out.Take for instance 1-800-Flowers.com and its recent Mother’s Day ad. If you ordered flowers for Mom, and had them delivered before Mother’s Day, you could receive an extra 25 percent off your purchase. This deadline forced customers to decide whether the deal was worth it or not, and take action accordingly.Expiration dates on special deals help people make up their minds about whether they want to purchase more quickly than occurs when they know they can come back a month from now for the same purchase.2. Use a countdown timer.Another way to inspire people to convert is to add a countdown timer to your website, reminding people that time is ticking away and their chance at getting a great deal or signing up for something special will soon be coming to an end.Related: 6 Ways to Drastically Improve Your Website’s Conversion RateIn fact, a study reported on ConversionXL showed that creating an actual countdown timer can be more effective than simply slapping an expiration date on a special deal. For example, MonsterInsights uses a countdown timer to show potential customers they can get a great deal using the coupon code, but only within the time frame of the timer.Do something similar. Use an eye-catching timer to create a sense of urgency with site visitors, and make the deal worthwhile. Then, watch your conversions increase right away.  3. Reflect the demand for and popularity of your product.People want in on things that others are interested in, too. For instance, Airbnb does a great job of showing potential travelers the hottest spots to stay at, illustrated by the example below of a Paris house that was available on the day the ad ran.Because Airbnb shared with site visitors the fact that others were thinking about renting that same house, those on the fence about booking might have been tempted to reserve it immediately. That’s because the more popular an item is, the more prized it will seem. As a result, viewers’ urgency to take action and grab it for themselves skyrockets.4. Use exit intent technologyUsing exit intent technology is a good way to inspire urgency in people, especially if you want them to convert and subscribe to your newsletter. After all, you know how important building a big email list is to your bottom line.A great example of a website using exit intent technology is found at Gimme Some Oven. The minute a site visitor starts leaving the website, a popup appears inspiring him or her to subscribe at the last minute in order to get new (and free!) recipes delivered straight to his or her  inbox. If this incentive seems worthwhile, that person may very well hand over contact information, giving Gimme Some Oven a new lead to nurture.5. Use “urgent” copy. You may not realize, but the copy you use in your headlines and call to action buttons can have a profound effect on someone’s desire either to take action immediately or wait until later. Words like “Now,” “Hurry,” and “Immediately” instill a sense of urgency in people and make them want to do something right away. For instance, CoSchedule has several call to action buttons on its homepage inviting people to start their free 14-day trial. However, most notable is the one near the bottom, for those that have scrolled through the entire page, but still haven’t committed:By using the phrase “Try it Free Now,” CoSchedule is reminding people that the trial is free and is encouraging them to take action right away. Chances are, it’ll help convert those last minute people.Related: 9 Ways to Increase Landing-Page ConversionsAnd there you have it!
