first_imgRick Pitino in a press conference.Louisville’s men’s basketball team went one-and-done in the ACC Tournament, losing its quarterfinal game to North Carolina Thursday afternoon. Following the contest, Cardinals’ coach Rick Pitino held a brief press conference with reporters. The first question came from Derek Brightwell, a reporter for the school’s student newspaper, the Louisville Cardinal. Brightwell asked Pitino why his team has struggled against the zone so much this season; Pitino was apparently not impressed with the question. The question starts at the 0:56 mark.  It is fairly clear why Louisville has struggled against the zone this season; they don’t shoot the ball well, which is typically a requirement for good offense when facing a zone defense. But Pitino pulled the I’m a big-time college basketball coach and you’re a student reporter that doesn’t know anything move, and he came across as a pretty big jerk in the process. The student reporter was apparently OK with it, though. Got thrashed by Pitino at the presser, but the @CardChronicle comment section was talking about me. The franchise, unfortunately slotted with the fourth pick (despite having the second-worst record in the league) in this year’s NBA Draft, chose Latvian center Kristaps Porzingis over former college stars like Justise Winslow, Frank Kaminsky and Stanley Johnson. The decision, which certainly may not turn out to be the wrong one in the long run, was met with a chorus of boos at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. One young fan was beside himself when he heard the news.Porzingis is just 19, so he may need a year or two to develop into a quality NBA player. It doesn’t look like Knicks fans are going to be patient heading into it all.last_img read more

Southgate: There’s no way I’d leave England

first_imgManager Gareth Southgate has said there’s no way he’d leave England to return to club management and believes his assistant Steve Holland is committed too.Holland spent six years as an assistant at Chelsea before linking up with Southgate for the national team and the pair have been linked with the role likely to be vacated by Maurizio Sarri. But Southgate says he and his staff are focused on getting England to the European Championships and continuing the recent progress they have made. I don’t need to hedge my bets in keeping doors open or keeping things alive,” he told a press conference“There’s no way that I would leave England at this point in time, to take any job.“The only thing on my mind is that we’ve got a European Championship next summer and we’ve got to keep improving to be the best possible team we can be for this country.“Why would I rush to leave that opportunity and chance to affect not just the football but the other parts that the role brings.“My sole focus is producing the best team possible for England.”Southgate acknowledged that his assistant would one day make the step up to management and was at pains to point out the influence of the man he called the best assistant in the game.“I’m sure that at some point in the future [Holland] is going to want to be a manager and take that opportunity. I don’t believe that would be now, because he is very committed to the work we are doing, looking forward to next summer.“But I also understand that, when you have a good staff, they’re going to be coveted by other people. That’s a healthy sign because you don’t want bad staff that nobody wants.“He’s the best assistant in the country, there’s no doubt in my mind about that. I’m very fortunate to have him with me.”England suffered a second semi-final defeat in as many years when they lost to the Netherlands in the Nations League on Thursday. They lost at the same stage in last year’s World Cup.Southgate insisted he and his players were hungry for success and improvement.“They don’t want to be settled and comfortable with semi-finals.“It is not enough for them, same for me. Kirk Herbstreit Reveals Initial Thoughts On Ohio State-Michigan Game

first_imgKirk Herbstreit On College Football's Most "Intimidating" StadiumESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has issued his initial thoughts on Saturday’s Ohio State-Michigan game.FOX has this year’s rivalry game, so Herbstreit will be able to make a pick on College GameDay, but for now, he’s just previewing it.Herbstreit thinks Ohio State should bring its best on Saturday.“They’re underdogs this week,” Herbstreit said this morning. “If a rivalry game at home when you’re an underdog doesn’t get you to bring their best, nothing can. One week, it’s their pass defense. Next week it’s, boy, they can’t seem to fit right against the run. They don’t seem to play inspired or together as a unit on defense. But if anything can bring that out, it’s a rivalry.“The defense seems to bring more emotion and love for one another and proves everybody wrong. At the end of the day, I don’t know if it’s good enough. Even if they do bring that game, is it good enough to beat a very determined Michigan football team?”Herbstreit thinks Michigan has been great this season, but the Wolverines could be vulnerable.“Michigan has shown potential vulnerability, but in my opinion, they have not played with the same edge against Rutgers and Indiana,” Herbstreit addded. “They did play that way against Penn State, Michigan State and Wisconsin. That’s the Michigan team that will show up Saturday in Columbus. Very focused. You can feel the ‘me’ around this team. This team is on a mission so we’ll see if Ohio State can match that enthusiasm on Saturday.”Ohio State and Michigan are set to kick off at noon E.T.The game will be on FOX.last_img read more

But Southee returned to finish off the lower order and to take 6-65 as Bangladesh was all out for 242.Ross Taylor top-scored for New Zealand with 69 and in doing so passed Stephen Fleming (8,007 runs) to become New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in one-day internationals. Munro has only been past 50 twice in his last 20 one-day innings but the New Zealand selectors still value him for his big-hitting ability.advertisementThe all-rounders who played Wednesday all did well with the bat. Colin de Grandhomme dashed an unbeaten 37 from 15 balls in inflate New Zealand’s total and likely seal his place in the World Cup squad. Beyerdynamic Unchains Audiophile Sound with Xelento Wireless In-Ears

Beyerdynamic Unchains Audiophile Sound with Xelento Wireless In-Ears

first_img 8 Best Wireless Headphones for Running: What to Know Before You Buy The Best Wired and Wireless Headphones for Travel Editors’ Recommendations The Best Podcasts to Listen to at Work The Evolution and History of the Home Stereo The Best Wireless Charging Pads and Stands, No Strings Attached Beyerdynamic is hoping to bring audiophiles into the Bluetooth fold with the new Xelento Wireless.A Bluetooth version of the exquisite Xelento Remote in-ear headphones, the Xelento Wireless combine the Tesla transducer technology that enables the pristine audio quality of the wired version with Qualcomm’s top-tier aptX HD Bluetooth transmission to create a pair of high-end wireless earphones.Apart from going cordless, the design for the Xelento Wireless is remarkably similar to that of the wired version. The earbuds are connected to a Bluetooth dongle at the end of the headphone wire, which terminates at about the same spot that the earbud wires converge on the wired version. So, while you’ll still have to deal with some cables, you’ll be untethered from whatever device you’ll be listening to. The dongle houses both the Bluetooth receiver and a battery, which can be charged via micro USB for up to five and a half hours playback time. The most important point of comparison is the drivers. Like the Xelento Remote, the Xelento Wireless use Tesla transducers — which are made with tiny ring magnets and voice coils — in an effort to offer the same fluid and pristine audio that we loved in the Xelento Remote in a wireless package. While it’s one thing to be equipped with high-performance drivers, wireless headphones have to contend with the obstacle of connection quality. It may seem unreliable to use Bluetooth as the transmission method, especially when these headphones are being marketed to the audiophile crowd, but Beyerdynamic is opting for the aptX HD codec (for those with aptX compatible devices), which is designed to enable 24-bit transmission at full resolution (Xelento wireless also supports aptX, AAC, and SBC Bluetooth). For those who want the option to listen via wired connection — or in the event your battery runs out — the Xelento wireless’ Bluetooth dongle features a 3.5mm jack to plug into.Considering the wired Xelento Remote cost a whopping $1,000, it’s no surprise that the Xelento wireless will be going for $1,200. Beyerdynamic will be debuting the earbuds at High End 2017 in Munich, Germany. The show takes place May 18-21.last_img read more

This Vintage OMEGA Speedmaster Watch Just Sold for More than $250,000

first_imgImage courtesy of BukowskisWe here at The Manual think that the Speedmaster is one of OMEGA’s most iconic watches. The design of this essential chronograph has stood the test of time in terms of style and functionality.A recent buyer at Bukowskis auction house in Stockholm thought so, too — so much so that the anonymous bidder paid 2,226,250 kr (Swedish krona) for a first-generation model from 1958. That’s equivalent to around $265,508 for those trying to calculate the exchange rate at home. Factoring in the buyer’s premium, the final tally came out north of $275,000, making this watch the most expensive Speedmaster ever sold. 12 Best Seiko Watches for Men, From Flashy to Functional Carbon Fiber Explained: Why It’s the Perfect Outdoor Gear Material Affordable Watch Hunting: 10 Best Timex Watches For Men 10 Top Shelf Vodka Brands that are Actually Worth a Damn center_img This particular Speedmaster (reference number CK 2915-1) was made from stainless steel and features a black dial with broad arrow hands and a high-quality internal caliber. The watch has paperwork to prove a build date of June 6, 1958.A major factor in its astronomical price was the original, unpolished condition of the timepiece. It’s almost impossible to find one with its original dial as well. The promenance of the watch, combined with the fact that the prior owner found it sitting in an attic, created a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a discerning watch collector. The selling price is sure to set precedence for other non-exclusive watches that share a similar age and condition across different manufacturers.OMEGA has been on a great run this year, introducing special edition watches like this one for one for 007 himself. Although the James Bond watch was a Seamaster, its extremely limited release is sure to make it a similarly sought-after watch in the years to come.Currently, the Speedmaster comes in eight different editions, from a basic Co-Axial Chronograph to a special Anniversary Limited Series. There are even two models that pay tribute to the 1957 edition of the watch, replicating the model year’s timeless design seen then (and resembling the 1958 model). All of this just goes to show that the old, dusty finds in the attic might be worth a second look. The 2017 Scotch Whisky Blend of the Year is Only $3,999

first_img The Best Bottles of Whiskey You Can Buy For $20 or Less When it comes to aged whiskies, master distillers and blenders work tirelessly to understand the right moment to bottle their spirit. Even with all that work, sometimes, after a bottling run of a spirit has been completed, there is some left over. This liquid then sits in barrels in some dark corner of a rack house for years, even decades, almost forgotten about. One of these whiskies that has just been brought to light is The Last Drop’s 1971 Blended Scotch Whisky. The Last Drop was formed around a decade ago by two men, James Espey and Tom Jago, both of whom had extensive experience in the spirits industry (they were responsible for the creation of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Chivas 18, just to name a few). Nearing retirement, both men knew that there were these barrels sitting around, and they decided that they wanted to find a way to pick the best ones and bring them to market. The duo’s newest release, 1971 Blended Scotch Whisky, was awarded 97 points and the title of Scotch Whisky Blend of the Year by Jim Murray in his 2017 Whisky Bible. Before being released, the whisky went through a process of triple maturation.First blended in 1983 as a 12-year-old whisky, the leftovers were put into 11 ex-Oloroso sherry butts. There, they aged for nine years. Some of this whisky was used for bottling a 21-year-old blend, and the rest went into nine oak barrels for the 24 years. In total, the blend contains more than 40 different single malt and grain whiskies. On the nose, you’ll find honey and vanilla, with some toasted almond, a bit of stewed apple, and just a hint of citrus. The palate is soft and fruity, with orange and lemon mixing with oak, while the finish is a little smoky, with chocolate and orange notes. It was bottled at 47.2 percent ABV.Seeing as there were not many barrels of this whisky to begin with, only 1,352 bottles of the 1971 were made available (compared to, say, the 750 that The Dalmore put out for their 40-year-old). If you manage to get a bottle, you’re getting a whisky that is, as they say, fancy AF. The Last Drop’s 1971 Blended Scotch Whisky comes in the company’s signature forest green leather case and comes accompanied by a 50 ml miniature replica, a custom-made stopper, a luxury tasting book, and a signed certificate of authenticity. (If you’re in the UK, you can check The Last Drop website to see where they are still available.)Oh, and did we mention that it’s only $3,999 per bottle? 5 of the Best Aged Tequilas to Drink When the Weather Cools Down 6 Essential Scotch Cocktails That You Need to Know The Best Blended Scotch Whiskies to Add to Your Collection William Grant and Sons Launches New Single Malt Whisky Brand Editors’ Recommendations last_img read more

What Is Pale Ale? Everything You Need to Know About the Basic Beer Style

first_img Editors’ Recommendations Why Tea and Beer Go Well Together (and 5 Tea Beers to Try) Virgin Voyages Sea-ks Name For New Cruise-Ship-Exclusive Beer Previous The pale ale isn’t sexy. It’s not extreme. It’s not a palate wrecker. But, believe it or not, there was a time when this humble beer style was the hottest thing going (think of it as a reverse She’s All That). In fact, the argument can be made that the American pale ale was the spark that ignited the fuse on the craft beer revolution. From the mid-1970s through the early 1980s, craft beer pioneers like Anchor Bering and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company perfected their recipes for pale ales, taking original English ale ingredients and processes then refining them to use a balanced blend of malts and American-grown hops. Within a few years, Anchor’s Liberty Ale and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale would help provide the financial backbone for those breweries to grow and thrive, setting the stage for more small breweries and more experimentation. The Best Fresh Hop Beers to Celebrate the Hop Harvest For decades, it was the norm for every American craft brewery to offer its own signature pale ale recipe as a part of a core lineup. Within the relatively narrow parameters of the pale ale style, it became difficult to stand out. The number of pale ales lining store shelves was overwhelming. In a crowded field without much diversity, breweries began to shelve their pale ales for the more aggressive India pale ale style, where balance and moderation are rarely encouraged. As craft beer continues to grow in sheer numbers, as well as style diversity, it’s the perfect time to look back on the American pale ale, recognize its place in the pantheon, and celebrate the breweries that are still making excellent pale ales. Most American pale ales are crafted of American two-row (or similar) malt, American hops (like Cascade), and American ale yeast. Most American pale ales are crafted of American two-row (or similar) malt, American hops (like Cascade), and American ale yeast. This simple foundation creates an easy-to-drink beer with a toasted biscuit base and bright but balanced hop profile. American pale ales pour in a variety of light colors from golden to amber, hence the “pale” signifier in the name. The middle of the road mouthfeel and higher carbonation create a refreshing drink with more tooth than summer ales or light lagers. The alcohol by volume percentage hovers in the 5 to 6 percent range, enabling casual consumers to enjoy more than one in a sitting. The best way to learn about pale ales isn’t to read about them. It’s to drink them.
