SU moved up two spots from last week’s posting following three-straight wins in the Cancun Challenge.On Nov. 22, the Orange toppled Kansas State, 70-61. A day later, SU demolished Princeton, 92-61. On Nov. 24, Tiana Mangakahia scooped a buzzer-beater in overtime to beat then-No.16 DePaul, 83-81. Syracuse has now won five straight, including two wins against ranked opponents, since losing by a bucket to then-No.3 Oregon in Eugene on Nov. 10.Four other Atlantic Coast Conference teams cracked the Top 25: No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 5 Louisville, No. 13 North Carolina State and No. 21 Miami. The Hawkeyes used a 17-4 run in the second half to take command in a 73-63 win at Northwestern, as you heard last night on AM-1300 KGLO. With junior forward Tyler Cook sidelined with a sore knee senior Nicholas Baer (bear) was inserted into the starting lineup and responded with nine points and 10 rebounds.Iowa made its run after the Wildcats took a seven point lead early in the second half.Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was pleased with how the Hawkeyes responded after falling behind early in the second half.Freshman Joe Wieskamp led Iowa with 19 points. The Hawkeyes are 2-3 in the Big Ten and 13-3 overall. == In the men’s game, 14th-ranked NIACC won their 10th straight contest with a come-from-behind 86-75 victory over Iowa Central. The Trojans trailed 66-60 with 8:30 left in the second half but they outscored the Tritons 26-9 the rest of the way to keep their winning streak alive. The 10-game winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in school history and longest since the 2006-07 team also put together a 10-game win streak. NIACC was led by freshman Wendell Matthews, who scored 23 points with 10 rebounds, a career-best six assists, two steals and one block. It was Matthews’ sixth double-double of the season. The Trojans also received 19 points from freshman Quentin Hardrict, 16 points from freshman James Harris and 10 points from Deaundra Roberson. NIACC is 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference and will return to action next Wednesday at DMACC. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have appointed Kevin Stefanski as offensive coordinator, after his interim stint over the last three games of the season. The 36-year-old Stefanski was promoted on Dec. 11 to replace John DeFilippo, who was fired in his first season on the job amid persistent struggles by the Vikings in moving the ball. Stefanski was a candidate for the head coach vacancy with the Cleveland Browns, who instead picked their own interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens. MASON CITY —- Both NIACC basketball teams picked up conference wins over Iowa Central at home last night. Freshman Autam Mendez scored a career-high 30 points, including eight three-pointers, to lead the 4th-ranked NIACC women over Iowa Central 79-62. Mendez was 11 of 19 from the field, including an 8 of 13 performance from 3-point range. Mendez also added nine rebounds and two steals. Also for the Lady Trojans Mandy Willems scored 17 points. Jada Buford scored 13 points and Tahya Campbell scored 12 points. NIACC is 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference and will travel to Iowa Western on Saturday for a non-conference contest. AMES — The 20th ranked Iowa State women are now 3-0 in the Big-12. The Cyclones outscored TCU 24-10 in the second quarter and rolled to a 92-54 win in Ames.That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. The Cyclones held TCU standout Jordan Moore to three shots and she finished with eight points.Iowa State is 13-2 overall and will host 11th-ranked Texas Saturday afternoon.
