Dodgers scratch Mat Latos, casting doubt on his future in rotation

Dodgers scratch Mat Latos, casting doubt on his future in rotation

first_imgANAHEIM >> If Mat Latos needed a strong start Wednesday against the Angels to maintain a spot in the Dodgers’ September rotation, his latest injury is a real pain in the neck.Latos was scratched because of a stiff neck that did not improve overnight, manager Don Mattingly said. Right-hander Joe Wieland started against the Angels instead. Will Latos get another chance to start a game for the Dodgers?“We haven’t really gotten too much past this start,” Mattingly said. “We’ve got five guys, I’m thinking Mat’s going to be back. It’s just something that crept up on us. I don’t look at it like he’s totally gone. I think he’ll still be available. We’ll see how things go.” Latos declined to comment on the situation.Hernandez ahead of scheduleKiké Hernandez said Wednesday that he’s “about a week” ahead of schedule in his recovery from a strained left hamstring.Hernandez said he’ll try running for the first time Friday, when the Dodgers begin a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. He would like to return during the Dodgers’ series against the Diamondbacks at home (Sept 21-24) or against the Rockies in Colorado (25-27).“At first we weren’t sure if I’d be back in time for the playoffs,” he said.Hamstring injuries aren’t always straightforward. Howie Kendrick has seemingly been stuck on “99 percent” for a couple weeks now, unable to run the bases at full speed. He still hasn’t appeared in a rehab game.Hernandez was the Dodgers’ starting center fielder at the time he went down. He has a .308 batting average in 71 games this season, with six home runs and 21 runs batted in. He has played six different positions in the field and committed just three errors.Wilson improving post-opIt’s been two weeks since Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson underwent season-ending surgery to remove bone spurs in his elbow, and he said he already feels much better than while he was pitching earlier in the year. His flexibility is much improved. Wilson smiled when asked what he’s able to do. “Clap,” he said. “High five.” Adopting a more serious tone, Wilson then said he plans to continue his flexibility program for his elbow, making sure “all the nerves and stuff like that are functioning properly,” and that he would begin a strength-training regime “in a couple of weeks.” Wilson also said there was nothing he could have done to avoid the injury. “Not unless I was in a time machine back to the time I was in the minor leagues and pitching with a blown-out elbow,” he said. “Everything goes back to pitching for a month without a ligament when I was in Double-A. I kept pitching and did more damage than I should have. … “Eventually, that stuff swells up and the bone starts to rub all the time and then it chips off like coral from a reef. If you took two pieces of coral and rubbed them against each other eventually you would get little chips. Obviously, there’s a lot of stress on your body.”Also …Dodgers shortstop Jimmy Rollins is expected back Friday. He’s missed the past few games with a sore right index finger. … Carl Crawford was held out of the Dodgers’ lineup with a stiff back. … The projected pitching matchups for the Angels’ three games against the Houston Astros this weekend: Jered Weaver will oppose left-hander Dallas Keuchel on Friday; Hector Santiago will oppose right-hander Lance McCullers on Saturday; Andrew Heaney will oppose right-hander Mike Fiers on Sunday. Latos is 0-2 in five starts for the Dodgers since he was acquired a day before the July 31 trade deadline. He was knocked out after four innings in his last start against the Padres, a 10-7 loss Thursday. There was some question coming into this week whether Latos or Mike Bolsinger would take Wednesday’s turn in the rotation, but Bolsinger threw a bullpen session Tuesday and will start Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks instead. The Dodgers have 23 games left in the regular season after today. Their starting rotation has only been mapped out for the next five: Alex Wood (Friday in Arizona), Bolsinger (Saturday in Arizona), Zack Greinke (Sunday in Arizona), Clayton Kershaw (Monday in Colorado) and Brett Anderson (Tuesday in Colorado).Mattingly said the injury only came to his attention Tuesday during the Dodgers’ 6-4 win. Latos was sent home during the game.“For me (the injury) came out of nowhere,” he said.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Anthony Davis injury update: Lakers star escapes with lower back contusion after scary fall vs. Knicks

Anthony Davis injury update: Lakers star escapes with lower back contusion after scary fall vs. Knicks

first_imgLakers fans can collectively exhale.Anthony Davis’ MRI came back clean Wednesday morning and revealed only a gluteus maximus contusion. He will travel with the team for its upcoming two-game road trip and be listed as questionable for Friday’s game against the Mavericks. MORE: Why Davis declining Lakers’ extension offer doesn’t matterDavis gingerly walked off the floor during the third quarter of Tuesday night’s contest against the Knicks after a scary fall. He collided with New York forward Julius Randle at the basket and landed directly on his back, leaving the six-time All-Star in considerable pain. Davis was surrounded by his teammates and medical personnel before leaving the floor slowly under his own power. The official diagnosis is good news for the Lakers and Davis, who is averaging 27.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.6 blocks and 1.5 steals in his first season with Los Angeles. Davis should be able to return relatively quickly from the contusion, though it’s unclear whether he will be available for this weekend’s back-to-back set.It will be a challenge for the Lakers to extend their current six-game winning streak without Davis, but they do hold the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference by 4.5 games over the Nuggets. They can afford to lose a a few regular-season games — they can’t afford to lose Davis for an extended stretch.last_img read more
