USC tennis finds itself in rarified air this year

first_img“Goal Line Stand” runs Thursdays. If you would like to comment on this story, visit DailyTrojan.com or email Michael at [email protected] The USC men’s and women’s tennis teams are both nationally ranked in the top-five in the latest polls released.Cherish it, Trojans. It is rare for a school to have a sport where both men’s and women’s teams are among the best in the country in a particular year.Chasing history · Few programs can boast championships in the same men’s and women’s sport in the same season. USC is on the verge of joining the group with help from players such as senior Allison Ramos. – Chris Roman | Daily TrojanThe first reason for this? Well, there isn’t as much crossover in the sports as one might think; there is, for example, no opposite-sex equivalent for football or softball — baseball is far different. But second, and perhaps most importantly, is that schools generally do not invest equal resources into their men’s and women’s programs. Generally, the best coaches aren’t available for hire because they are out of the athletic department’s price range. This season, however, Peter Smith is leading a Trojan squad that is looking for its fourth-consecutive national championship. They sit atop the polls and figure to until they lose.Richard Gallien, on the other hand, has led the Women of Troy to the No. 2 spot nationally, and has USC poised to win its first championship since 1985.To put into perspective how rare it is to have a sport win both men’s and women’s titles in the same year, let’s look at some of the squads that have accomplished the feat.2004 Connecticut basketballThe 2004 men’s team was led by guard Ben Gordon and forward/center Emeka Okafor. This team was dominant. They went 33-6 and Gordon and Okafor were the third and second picks in the 2004 draft, respectively. The women were led by forward Diana Taurasi and legendary coach Geno Auriema. They went 31-4 and defeated Tennessee in the national championship game by nine points.1984 UCLA volleyballVolleyball can sometimes go unnoticed, but the Bruins were tough to ignore in 1984. The men’s squad went undefeated, while the women went 33-6. The competition wasn’t even close.2011 California swim and diveCal has been a dominant force in swim and dive the past few years. Coach Teri McKeever led the women to the top spot last season, while coach David Durden took the men to the top of the swimming world.2010 USC water poloJovan Vavic is the coach of USC’s men’s and women’s teams, and the success the men have been known for has certainly been evident on the women’s side, too. The Trojans have won four titles in a row, and the women have been in the national championship game four of the last six seasons. The women are poised to win a title this year; we will have to wait and see how it ends up unfolding.2003 Stanford cross-countryCross-country falls under the radar as much as any sport does, as most fans do not line up to watch. Stanford, however, managed to establish dominance in 2003 despite a lack of public attention on them. Pretty impressive, considering the students at the schools likely didn’t know they had             cross-country teams. There are probably others that I have missed, but the point is that if there are, there aren’t many.It is uncommon for a men’s and women’s program from the same school to win a championship because, plain and simple, schools don’t always focus on the sexes equally. Tennessee basketball has dominated the women’s circuit, but the men’s team has yet to win a title.North Carolina women’s soccer has won multiple titles, yet the men have just one.Duke men’s basketball has dominated. The women? No titles. The fact is that it just doesn’t happen.USC fans should be proud of where the men’s and women’s tennis teams stand this season. If both teams do end up at the top of the college rankings, we need to be proud. Proud that our teams have reached rarified air.Though football is king here, it should not overshadow the accomplishment that USC might be close to earning. It has only happened a handful of times, and the fact that it could happen at USC is noteworthy.last_img read more

‘Should I continue racing?’: Hamilton reveals lockdown low

first_imgThe season won’t start until July 5 in Austria at the earliest.“Mentally it’s really about ultimately feeling good about yourself. It’s about finding a way to make sure you love yourself,” added Hamilton, speaking ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week.“You have to really be able to love yourself and be comfortable on your own.”He added: “If we are not improving and growing during these days then what are we doing? You’re obviously just wasting your time sitting on your backside.” London, United Kingdom | AFP | Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton admitted Sunday that he questioned his future in Formula One during the coronavirus lockdown which left him struggling for motivation.“I have days when I wake up and feel groggy, I don’t feel motivated to work out. I feel, ‘Jeez, where are we going? What’s next? Should I continue racing?’,” the 35-year-old said in a video released by his Mercedes team.“I think all these different things, and then I’m like ‘Damn it!’, and the next hour, or whatever, it passes, and I’m like ‘Damn! I love what I do! Why would I ever consider not continuing?’”Hamilton is hoping to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles this season. However, he has been left kicking his heels as the spread of the coronavirus has seen 10 races either cancelled or postponed. Liston lifts No. 3 Duke women to 111-67 rout of Pitt

(AP Photo/Gerry Broome)DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – Tricia Liston broke a record and helped break open a game with one shot.It was that kind of day for Duke.Liston scored 23 points and became Duke’s all-time leader in career 3-pointers as the No. 3 Blue Devils beat Pittsburgh 111-67 on Sunday.Elizabeth Williams added 20 points for the Blue Devils (20-1, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who shot a season-best 60 percent from the floor and never trailed.Haley Peters had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Duke. Amber Henson added a career-high 13 points, Oderah Chidom had 12 and Alexis Jones had 11 for the Blue Devils.“There have been games when we felt not very deep,” Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “Today, we felt like the deepest team in America. Everybody was doing what they can do.”Liston led the way, making 8 of 10 shots from the floor and 3 of 4 3-point attempts. Her record-breaking 223rd 3-pointer came on a jumper from the left wing with 13:24 left in the first half. The shot gave the Blue Devils a 20-12 lead and started a 15-2 run that helped them take control of the game.Liston’s record previously was held by Abby Waner.“It’s kind of irrelevant when you’re playing,” Liston said. “But off the court, it’s a great accomplishment and something I’m very proud of. But I try not to think about it too much when I’m playing, if at all.”Brianna Kiesel scored 19 points to lead the Panthers (9-11, 1-5), who shot 30 percent. Asia Logan added 17 points and Loliya Briggs had 12 points for Pittsburgh.“Duke is very talented,” Pittsburgh coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. “If you try to take away an inside presence, they kill you from outside. They’re just so balanced and have so many weapons. It was a tough matchup for us across the board. We were undersized, overmatched.”Duke reached 20 wins for the 17th consecutive season, the third longest active streak in the country. The Blue Devils also extended their ACC-record home winning streak against conference foes to 42 games and posted their 130th consecutive home victory against unranked opponents.Duke led 55-29 after a first half that featured plenty of highlights in addition to Liston’s record-breaking 3-pointer.After Pittsburgh cut Duke’s lead to 34-22 lead with eight minutes remaining, the Blue Devils delivered a 17-2 spurt to pull away.Jones had the crowd oohing, aahing and roaring in the span of a few seconds with a series of behind-the-back dribbles followed by a no-look feed to Williams for a layup. Later during the run, Henson made the first 3-pointer of her career.Duke made 17 of its first 22 field goal attempts en route to shooting 66 percent from the floor in the first half. The Panthers, meanwhile, were just 8 for 37 as they struggled to hit perimeter shots against Duke’s zone. Pittsburgh came up with 12 offensive rebounds in the first half, but those extra opportunities yielded only seven points.“Our players have the green light to take a shot,” McConnell-Serio said. “They’re all capable of hitting it. I’ve seen it. We just didn’t hit enough of them.”last_img read more

Each piece is individually made and is entirely unique.Exotic woods decorate the homeBecause most of the crafters live in the far rural areas where transport is often unreliable, Khumbulani’s own field traders take the orders and necessary raw materials to them, and later bring the finished goods to the organisation’s Johannesburg offices for cataloguing, packaging and distribution.Products available include items made from volcanic stone found in the North West province; Ilala palm products; beaded products; home textiles; and Christmas decorations. The wood collection includes head rests; spoons and servers; stools; and handmade laundry baskets. They are created from indigenous and exotic tree species such as jacaranda.According to Mandla Nkoana, Khumbulani’s Mpumalanga field manager, jacaranda wood is currently popular in the décor industry. This, he said in a statement, is because it is easy to work with, has a light, pleasing colour and a fine grain, and dries relatively quickly. The fact that it’s an exotic species is even more advantageous.Helping the environment and alleviating povertyThe crafters get their jacaranda wood from Trans African Concessions (Trac), a company that develops, maintains, and rehabilitates the N4 highway between Pretoria, Komatipoort in Mpumalanga and Maputo in Mozambique. This route is known as the Maputo Corridor.Khumbulani struck a deal with Trac whereby jacaranda trees that were harvested as part of the company’s environmental management strategy, were donated to the crafters to help them fulfil the sizeable Wetherlys order.“We are grateful to Trac for donating the wood because it fits in well with our vision of producing environment-friendly crafts,” said Nkoana.“And we are grateful to Wetherlys for placing one of the largest retail orders that Khumbulani Craft has acquired to date.”For indigenous trees, Khumbulani runs a tree-planting programme which aims to restock indigenous trees used by the wood carvers. This also applies to other indigenous species such as Ncema grass, used to make traditional Zulu baskets.last_img read more

South African women making progress

South African women making progress

first_imgAlthough government has put policies in place to help women and great strides have been made in the past 20-years the report says corporate South Africa still has to recognise the importance of women as too few are in senior roles and in many instances, earn less than their male counterparts. (Image: Judy Seidman, African Activist Archive)The Status of Women Report has been released by President Jacob Zuma during the commemoration of Women’s Day 2015.Women’s Day marks the day 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, to petition against the apartheid regime’s racist pass laws.During the celebrations Zuma revealed South Africa’s first Status of Women Report that tracks the advancement of women in the economy across five areas: education, the labour market, poverty, inequality and access to assets and credit. The theme for this year’s Women’s Month is “Women united in moving South Africa forward”.Zuma said: “Today we mark 20 years since our country began celebrating National Women’s Day. This day was designated to celebrate the gallant contribution of South African women to the struggle for liberation and the attainment of the democracy we enjoy in our country.“National Women’s Day also provides an opportunity to track the progress made in the advancement of women and in improving the quality of life of all women in our country, especially the poor and the working class.”Zuma added that repressive laws entrenching white privilege in the apartheid era suppressed women in many ways up to this day. Women – and black women in particular – still suffer from that legacy.“Also, if we are to succeed economically as a country, women must participate at both the micro and macro levels of the economy,” said Zuma.AFTER 1994With the dawn of a new democracy measures were put in place to empower women socially and economically.According to the report, significant progress has been made in areas such as legal status, attitudes, women’s involvement in decision-making especially at political level, in employment, education, ownership of homes and businesses, the justice system, and economic participation.Women representation in the National Assembly moved from a mere 2.7% pre 1994 to the current 41%. The representation of women in Cabinet has also risen following the 2014 general election and stands at 43%, with deputy Ministers being at 45.9%.Zuma said: “Women constitute about 33% of all the judges in our judiciary. The judiciary had two white women in 1994. Now, in democracy, there are 61 women judges of which 48 are black women. Furthermore, we have two women Judge Presidents and a woman Deputy Judge President. Women constitute about 41% of the total magistracy.”However it’s not all sunshine as the Employment Equity Report indicates that in 2014, women still accounted for only 21% of top executive management positions and 32% of all senior management positions. Women appear to be stuck at both middle and junior management levels where they account for 45% and 43% respectively.“It would be good to have more women serving on the boards of directors of corporate South Africa,” said Zuma.WOMEN STILL BEAR THE BRUNTAnother sobering assessment of where women stand in South Africa is the wage gap between working women and men. More than 46% of South African working women earn R2 500 or less, as opposed to 33% of men in that same wage bracket.Women also bear the brunt of joblessness more than men and using data from the National Income Dynamics Survey, the report found in 2012 that over 63% of black South African women lived below the national lower poverty line of R597 per month, as opposed to just 1.6% of white women.According to the report between 2008 and 2012, the proportion living in poverty didn’t change for black women yet it decreased for white women and rose markedly for coloured women.GETTING EDUCATEDThe report shows there are more women graduating from tertiary institutions than men.A Commission on Higher Education report reveals that women are more successful in their studies. In 2007, 59% of graduates were women, although only 55.5% of all enrolled students were women.Zuma said: “At the universities of technology, 55% of graduates were women compared with 51% of enrolments. In the comprehensive universities 62% of graduates were women, while women made up only 57% of enrolments. And at the universities, 59% of graduates were women, compared to 56% of enrolment.“In the education field more than 70% of the graduates are women while in the human and social sciences, more than 60%.”last_img read more

The Lenses Through Which I View People

The Lenses Through Which I View People

first_imgThere are a lot of lenses through which you can view things. Your sales process is a conceptual framework from which to view sales. The methodologies that you use are also lenses on how to think about certain ideas. I study human achievement, success, and psychology, believing that all the results we produce are through, for and with people, and the problems we have are people problems. Here are four of the lenses I use.Anthony Robbins’ Six Human Needs Psychology: Robbins is known for a lot of things, mostly for his late-night television infomercials and Personal Power II. But that was early work for him, and as powerful as it is, the work he does with people at his live events and at Robbins-Madanes Training is far more interesting and useful. That work is fundamentally built on his Six Human Needs Psychology, which makes Maslow’s hierarchy useful.Robbins believe that you have six human needs: certainty, uncertainty (variety), love (or connection), significance, growth, and contribution. You are driven primarily by two of these needs, even though you have all of them. Some people choose healthy vehicles to meet these needs, while others make unhealthy choices (you could exercise to change your mental state, or you could do drugs).Robbins uses his brand of NLP, his massive charisma, and his gifts of connecting and communicating to help people change. But just knowing what needs someone is trying to meet can help you understand how best to help them.Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits: Stephen Covey was an educator, a teacher. In 1989 he wrote a self-help book that is still one of the best of its kind, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey’s great contribution was recognizing that you first had to gain control over yourself (what he called “Independence”) before you could be effective working with others (or what Covey called “Interdependence”).Most of the problems you or I have as a human being can be solved by working on one (or more) of Covey’s habits. The first three, “Be Proactive,” “Begin with the End in Mind,” and “Put First Things First,” are a recipe for identifying your values, designing your life, and doing what is most important. The next three habits, “Think Win-Win,” “Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood,” and “Synergize,” are about putting relationships first, being empathetic and caring, and teamwork. The final habit is to “Sharpen Your Saw,” or make time to renew yourself. This is about sustainability. All of Covey’s work is built on the idea that there is abundance, not scarcity, and that there is always a way to produce a better result. Looking at the challenges you are dealing with through Covey’s lens can help you easily pinpoint the root of almost any people-related problem you face.Ken Wilber’s All Quadrants, All Levels: There simply isn’t any way to describe Ken Wilber’s work effectively. Wilber is mostly philosopher, but the actionable and interesting part of his work is about developmental lines, how human being grow up and wake up. Wilber calls this work Integral Theory. It’s not easy to summarize Wilber’s map of everything, but it begins with the idea that human beings are capable of over two dozen types of intelligence (or lines), some of the most important being cognitive and moral intelligence. Wilber suggests that cognitive intelligence without moral intelligence leads to things like Enron and Nazi doctors. .Wilber’s levels are more difficult to describe, but he has mapped every developmental psychologists work and lined up the commonalities. All human cultures grow through these levels, and the easiest way to understand them is to look at Clare Graves and Don Beck’s Spiral Dynamics. The levels are: Beige (survival), Purple (kin spirits, magical), Red (power gods, mythical), Blue (truth force, absolutes), Orange (Strive, independence), and Green (human bonds, or pluralistic), Yellow (FlexFlow, integrative), and Turquoise (GlobalView, holistic).Wilber’s work is the best and most comprehensive map of human psychological and cultural development. This work is useful in understand why people believe and behave the way they do, and it does so without being judgmental.Howard Bloom’s The Lucifer Principle, Global Brain, and Genius of the Beast: If Wilber is difficult to describe, Bloom is impossible. He is a scientist first and foremost, and his fundamental principle is “the truth at any price, even the price of your life.” Bloom studies the superorganism that is we humans, and one of his experiments was running his own PR firm where he handled the careers of people like Prince, Michael Jackson, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, and John Cougar Mellencamp, among others.Bloom’s contributions to science are many, and he is the most well-read and meticulous researcher you will ever meet. Bloom discovered that the selfish gene doesn’t drive our behavior; we’re not all individual selection. In fact, we are driven by group selection too, and these groups are the products of memes, the cultural beliefs that connect us to each other.Bloom’s perceptual framework includes self-organizing systems (replicators), the superorganism (of which you and I are members), memes (self-replicating clusters of ideas), the neural net (or group mind), and the pecking order (dominance hierarchies).Bloom’s work helps you understand the massive cultural shifts that have occurred throughout history and what drove them. You can use these lenses to understand the great scope and sweep of history and to understand why the major issues and trends of the day are occurring now.You can use these lenses to better understand people. You can also turn them inward and better understand the one person you most need to better understand. Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Nowlast_img read more
