Vacation Dreams

first_imgIt’s time to take my bike on a vacation. It’s been entirely too long since it’s been outside of the Pisgah National Forest, and we’re ready to be somewhere warm and dry. Not that it’s been all that cold here.I haven’t even bothered to scrape the caked dirt out from beneath the downtube since November. The derailleur still moves, and is somewhat new, so there’s a start. Maybe I’ll give it a good scrub and take it to the Southwest. We need a good roll in the sage. The stressful tide of events has been gathering speed for a good year now. It’s possible that there are still a few more miles to cover, but surely the worst of it is over? For all I know, this is the new status quo. Just in the same way that it’s never a “good” time to have a baby, I think it’s also never a “good” time to take a holiday. I think it’s best just to jump ship every once in a while between the storms. It’s the return that always sucks the most anyway. There’s always that week of post-vacation punishment where you are confronted with what was blown off before you left, what was coming due once back, and what you didn’t realize couldn’t live without you. Then there’s always a little pearl on top: the emergency that occurred, like a flood, fire, or robbery. But let’s not worry our heads about that when there are maps over which to pour! The Northwest is always a treat, but I guess that means the bike would be left behind for a snowboard. Then again, so many of my beloved friends are out there now that it could be an excellent way to spend a week frolicking whilst drinking beer from the back of a horse.California would be fun, but I might be tempted to visit family. I won’t even get into what could happen in that scenario.Maybe I need to start poking my homies here for some vacation assistance, but then it might become a dirt bike trip with the girls instead. We’ve already fantasized about it for two years now – prom dresses and dirt bikes on the Trans American Trail from Colorado to Oregon. Never mind the part between here and Colorado, which can be done on a shorter trip. But wait, that’s the wrong kind of bike. Maybe the Continental Divide? Ok, just a part of it. I can’t bear the thought of being away from my children for more than a week just yet.Although I just got invited on a paddling trip down the Colorado…how often does one catch the lottery?!Back to bikes…MEXICO! Where there’s a combination of bikes, sun and imbibing, combined with great food and cheap tequila. Hola!last_img read more

The club announced the hiring on Sunday after it fired Roberto Moreno.Kovac was scheduled to lead his first training session on Monday.“His energy, his way of working and his vision of the game make him the coach the club needs to assert our ambitions and build solid foundations to create sustainable success for the future,” sporting director Paul Mitchell said. The 48-year-old former Croatia international coached Bayern to a league and cup double in 2019 but was fired in November.Monaco finished in ninth place last season, having narrowly avoided relegation the season before during a turbulent campaign where it fired Leonardo Jardim, hired former France great Thierry Henry, then fired Henry and re-hired Jardim. SACRAMENTO – California’s prison system is wasting $143 million a year on flawed drug-treatment programs for addicted inmates and parolees, the state inspector general said Wednesday. University studies found no sign that the programs reduced the number of inmates returning to prison. Yet the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation failed to make changes even after spending of millions of dollars on repeated studies that revealed shortcomings, Inspector General Matthew Cate said in a report. The department mixed addicts with other inmates, effectively ruining attempts to create a community of addicts who would support one another while they received treatment, Cate said. The department also let private counselors provide less intensive treatment than was required by their state contracts, Cate said. Ongoing problems with the unit prompted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to announce Tuesday that he was creating a Division of Addiction and Recovery Services within the corrections department. He appointed as director Kathleen Jett, who has been director of the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs since 2000. The inspector general praised the restructuring. National studies found a 7percent reduction in new criminal offenses by addicts who received proper treatment, Cate said.last_img read more

Soggy conditions Between the Rows

Soggy conditions Between the Rows

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Things are wet and miserable. Every three days it rains. I have straw that has been rained on four times. We finally got all the wheat cut. When you get nice days do you bale straw or go cut the wheat before it gets rained on for four straight days and the test weight goes down? They brought a draper out to demo and we finished cutting wheat last night about 11.Here around home the wheat was in the 75- or 80-bushel range, which I wasn’t too upset with, but the wheat was pretty rough on one of our south farms. It was just too wet. Quality wise we haven’t hauled any in yet, but things are looking promising as far as the markets go. We have a bunch of wheat sold and we have heard the test weights have been good. The wheat is actually worth something now and we wanted to get it off.We got about 20 acres of 150 acres of straw baled. We ended up round baling a bunch of it. We still have a bunch of straw laying in a windrow that has been rained on three times. The last couple of years of farming I feel like a Cleveland Browns fan. You always start out with a positive attitude and you get halfway through the season and you’re saying, “There’s always next year.”It was wet and we finally got planted and things got going. Now it is so wet again. In the last week or so of June we got over three inches in two days and we got another inch last week. We’ve had between four and five inches of rain in the last two or three weeks and it has been hard rain. We have corn that came up beautifully and now we have ocean waves of corn with high spots and low spots and everything else in between. We should be making the second cutting of hay and now that’s getting behind too. Would you rather have an overly wet year or a dry year? At least when it is dry, you can get work done. When you are wet you can’t do anything and you get behind. Along with all of that, we are having a Stark County Cattlemen’s event here Saturday and we have to get things cleaned up.For the rest of this week’s reports, click here.last_img read more
