‘Remedy’ just a lousy trick?

‘Remedy’ just a lousy trick?

first_imgCHICAGO – Parents who paid $285 for an experimental head lice treatment for their children might be scratching their own heads now that the doctor selling the stuff says it’s really a skin cleanser available for less than $10 a bottle at drugstores nationwide. Dr. Dale Pearlman got widespread media attention and skepticism from some experts last year when the journal Pediatrics published his study detailing results with a product he called Nuvo lotion. He described it as a “dry-on suffocation-based pediculocide” and the first in a new class of nontoxic lotions for head lice. His Web site claimed the costly treatment was available only at his Menlo Park, Calif., office. But now, in a letter to the editor for release today in December’s Pediatrics, Pearlman says the treatment “was actually Cetaphil cleanser,” made by a company he has nothing to do with and available over the counter nationwide and abroad. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREBlues bury Kings early with four first-period goals The letter “kind of blows the cover,” said University of Minnesota medical ethicist Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, who called Pearlman’s failure until now to disclose his product’s true identity ethically troubling. “He seems to imply that you could do it yourself” – something patients, as well as doctors and Pediatrics’ peer reviewers who read last year’s study, would have wanted to know, Kahn said. “You don’t pull tricks on your colleagues and the peer review.” Leonard Fleck, a Michigan State University medical ethicist, said Pearlman’s lack of disclosure in the original study made it impossible for other scientists to test his methods. “At the very least, there’s deception there for reasons of self-interest,” Fleck said. Pearlman acknowledged that he didn’t disclose the information until now “because I wanted to get rich” and hoped pharmaceutical companies would offer him money to further develop a Cetaphil-based product for head lice. When that didn’t happen, he decided to write the letter. “I thought it would be so fun to make the world a better place by telling everyone about this,” Pearlman said in a phone interview. He would not say how many patients had sought the treatment or how much money he’d made on it since his study was published. He said they were given bottles of Nuvo and were told the treatment was part of his research, but were not told they were getting Cetaphil. Pearlman said his treatment should still be considered novel because it uses Cetaphil in a new way – having patients apply the lotion and dry it with a hair dryer to suffocate head lice. Diagnostic testing makes the in-office price worth it, Pearlman said. Brent Petersen, communications manager for Cetaphil’s maker, Galderma Laboratories LP of Fort Worth, Texas, called Pearlman’s tactics “a bit misleading” and said nobody at the company knew anything about Pearlman’s use of Cetaphil before being told of his letter. “We’ll obviously look into it,” Petersen said. He said Cetaphil’s label clearly states that it is a skin cleanser and that Galderma has no data confirming or denying that it is an effective head-lice treatment. A spokeswoman for the California Medical Board said that there is no public record of any disciplinary action against Pearlman but that complaints and investigations are not public information. Dr. Jerold Lucey, Pediatrics’ editor, called Pearlman “a bit of a huckster” and said that, in hindsight, when Pearlman submitted his study “I probably (should) have said: ‘We can’t publish this if you can’t tell us what it is.”‘ However, said Lucey, “You’ve got to give him points for writing” to set the record straight. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. SA web marketer hits the target

SA web marketer hits the target

first_img14 February 2007South African company IncuBeta has wasted little time in exploiting the potential offered by keyword-sensitive advertising on the internet’s most popular search engine.Founded by entrepreneur Vinny Lingham in 2003, the web marketing company already has 50 staff, offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and London and turnover of over R50-million a year.It also, as of 31 January, has R15-million in venture capital backing for an ambitious growth strategy involving opening offices in Silicon Valley in the US, strengthening its European presence and, by 2009, listing on the Johannesburg or London stock exchange.Last week, IncuBeta received the first R15-million instalment of a R25-million investment from HBD Venture Capital, the venture capital fund established by South African internet billionaire Mark Shuttleworth.“This is a truly South African company with no real local competition,” HBD’s Eben van Heerden said in a statement. “It is rated as one of the top three internet marketing companies in the world by Commission Junction, part of the Nasdaq-listed ValueClick Inc.“The company has developed robust technology in-house and this provides the perfect platform to achieve future expansion,” Van Heerden said.“IncuBeta’s clients include many of the biggest online retailers in the world, and it operates one of the world’s most sophisticated keyword bid management software systems. We plan to work closely with incuBeta to ensure exponential growth happens quickly.”Riding the Google, Web2.0 waveAccording to IncuBeta CEO Giles Douglas, search engine marketing is growing at over 40% per annum – speeded particularly by the advent of Web2.0, which has changed the internet from a tool used largely for information purposes to an interactive social arena.“Google is the fastest growing company of all time, and is at the forefront of search and more recently Web2.0,” Douglas said.Google turnover is derived predominantly from auctioning keywords for searches, allowing merchants to create highly targeted advertising campaigns linked to specific searches.IncuBeta bids on millions of different keyword combinations, to which it then links targeted advertisements for its clients. The company currently places over 50 million targeted adverts a month.“In the next few years we expect to see search engine marketing moving from personal computers onto mobile phones, television and even in-car navigation systems,” Douglas said. “We aim to be at the forefront of these technological changes – and the investment by HBD will help us achieve this.”Ploughing back into South AfricaDouglas says that incuBeta’s headquarters will remain in South Africa, and that the company has begun to transfer its knowledge of search engine marketing and other Web2.0 trends locally. The company recently launched IncuBeta Consulting to help South African companies to benefit from the many possibilities offered by the internet.Van Heerden hopes IncuBeta’s success will inspire more South Africans to ake the entrepreneurial plunge. “All too often, we are put off ‘going it alone’ because we believe that our ideas must have already been done abroad.“This is often not the case, and we encourage local talent with business ideas to explore these to the full. Many of the leading economies of the world were built on small-to-medium size enterprises, so this is a definite priority for South Africa’s future growth.”SouthAfrica.info reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Youth service, achievements honoured

Youth service, achievements honoured

11 October 2013South Africa’s future is in good hands, President Jacob Zuma said as he joined Britain’s Prince Edward in recognising the achievements of 130 young people from across the country at the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment ceremony in Cape Town on Thursday night.Presenting the awards at the Table Bay Hotel together with Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, and Sophie Rhys-Jones, the Countess of Wessex, Zuma paid tribute to Mandela, the awards’ founding patron-in-chief, who passed the role on to him in 2010.The awards form part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme, which takes place in 144 countries.Zuma praised the 300 award recipients and 1 500 youngsters from schools, community youth groups and correctional centres that took part in the awards programme through various projects – including a pre-school literacy project in the Eastern Cape, a clothing project for those in need in the Western Cape, and a desk refurbishing project for a needy school in Gauteng.“We always say that the youth are the future of our country, but it takes coming to an event like this and to see the determination to succeed and to contribute to building the country, that we become convinced that indeed, this country will be in good hands.”Zuma was encouraged to hear about the joint collaborative projects that the youth are involved in through the programme.“In fact, we are particularly pleased by the participation of youth from correctional centres, as our view is that their lives must change for the better,” Zuma said, pointing out that the introduction of the award programme in correctional centres was Mandela’s initiative. He said he was also encouraged to learn that, as part of the awards’ 30th anniversary year, three regional workshops were held with the support of Brand South Africa, the National Youth Development Agency and the Department of Arts and Culture.Part of each workshop involved award participants being informed about the National Development Plan (NDP) and how they, as young people, could help to realise the plan’s Vision 2030.“We want the youth to own the NDP and to be part of its implementation, as it is designed to make this country a better place for them.”Zuma added that the awards programme played an important role in promoting relations between South Africa and the UK.Last month, during the 10th session of the SA-UK Bilateral Forum, a youth empowerment dialogue was held to discuss youth employment, skills and entrepreneurship.South Africa and the UK both recognised that, in tackling social transformation, it was crucial to create “platforms in which youth development in all its forms can thrive and translate into meaningful contributions to the economy”, Zuma said.Jason Caldicott, a prison inmate and drug addict who joined the Presidents Awards programme and took part in making a film and in various community projects, said the programme had helped change his perspective on life, such that he was “ready to contribute to a better South Africa”.Source: SAnews.gov.za read more

Employ the Usage Tab to Simplify a DaVinci Resolve Project

Employ the Usage Tab to Simplify a DaVinci Resolve Project

first_imgThe Usage Tab can help remove unused clips from a large media pool and make any DaVinci Resolve project easier to manage. In addition to crafting aesthetically pleasing shots, the more mundane task of managing grades, clips, and timelines is also a colorist’s job. Removing unused clips from a large media pool makes any DaVinci Resolve project easier to manage, but how do you know what’s being used and what isn’t?There’s a small feature represented as a piece of metadata called Usage that can help with this detective work. Let’s look at how to use it.For the sake of this demonstration, load the entire contents of a project drive into the DaVinci Resolve project, and then import any timeline that references the footage via XML, EDL or AAF. The majority of edited timelines will use significantly less footage than was shot.Above: import your XML first. Here’s a complicated project with multiple camera formats and resolutions.Head to the Media page, the best place for managing footage and analyzing the wide variety of metadata information such as frame rate, resolution, and file path. The Media page organizes every clip in sortable spreadsheet-style tabs familiar to any NLE user. Right-clicking on the column heading brings up a host of other metadata options that can be hidden or revealed. The one we’re looking for is Usage.Above: right-click the main column heading and select Usage from the myriad options. At first, Usage displays a column in which every row shows a default letter X. We’ll need to refresh the column to reflect what’s being used in the cuts.Above: selecting usage reveals a column with default Xs. Right-click anywhere in the media footage pool and select Update Usage Data near the bottom.Above: right-click anywhere in the media pool and select Update Usage Data near the bottom.Clicking this will either maintain the Xs or transform them into numbers. The numbers correspond to how many times the footage is referenced in the project’s timeline. Anything denoted with an X is not being used and can be safely removed from the project without producing the dreaded offline graphic.Above: some of the clips now display numbers, indicating their use in the cut.Since we’ll be removing media from our project, you may want to save a version of your project before the next step so you can always revert back to a more complete project. From here, click the Usage column to sort it. This will separate the used shots away from the unused shots. Then it’s just a matter of shift-selecting all the unused clips, right-clicking within them, and choosing Removed Selected Clips.Sorting the Usage column separates the used clips from the unused. It’s easy now to remove the unreferenced clips to simplify your project.Got any additional tips for consolidating projects? Let us know in the comments below.last_img read more

The franchise, unfortunately slotted with the fourth pick (despite having the second-worst record in the league) in this year’s NBA Draft, chose Latvian center Kristaps Porzingis over former college stars like Justise Winslow, Frank Kaminsky and Stanley Johnson. The decision, which certainly may not turn out to be the wrong one in the long run, was met with a chorus of boos at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. One young fan was beside himself when he heard the news.Porzingis is just 19, so he may need a year or two to develop into a quality NBA player. Football Timing of Urban Meyers retirement saves Ohio State millions

Football Timing of Urban Meyers retirement saves Ohio State millions

Urban Meyer watches the Buckeye offense in the third quarter of the game against Penn State on Sept. 29. Ohio State won 27-26. Credit: Casey Cascaldo | Photo EditorUrban Meyer will leave more than just his legacy at Ohio State. When the Buckeyes head coach retires Jan. 2, he will leave millions of dollars on the table, abandoning nearly $28 million in guaranteed pay had he remained as head coach until his contract expired in 2023.Meyer was set to receive an annual base salary of $840,000, with guarantees of $4,544,000 per year, according to an addendum in his contract signed in March 2018. He was also to receive separate payments of $160,000 for each January 31 he was employed between 2019 and 2022. He also forgoes bonuses that could add another $12 million if his team was successful on the field and in the classroom. According to the third addendum in Meyer’s contract, the Ohio State head coach could receive bonuses of $50,000 for winning the Big Ten East, $100,000 for winning the Big Ten, $200,000 for appearing in a College Football Playoff bowl game and $250,000 for appearing in a College Football Playoff semi-final game. However, if his team were to advance to the College Football Playoff finals, he would not receive the $250,000 but would instead be receive $350,000.The contract also offers bonuses of $50,000 for winning Big Ten Coach of the Year and $75,000 for National Coach of the Year. Despite winning three Big Ten titles and a national championship, Meyer never received either of the two coach of the year awards. If Ohio State had chosen to buy Meyer out of his contract after this season, Meyer would have received a buy-out of $38,058,402. Meyer would only receive that money if his contract was terminated by the university for a reason beyond one deemed as “for cause.”In an extension signed in March of 2018, Ohio State and the head coach agreed on this buy-out amount unless Meyer’s contract had been terminated “for cause.” The contract would be void if the head coach violated Ohio State’s Sexual Misconduct Policy and Title IX, which includes sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate violence and stalking. Meyer was suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season after he had “failed to adhere to the precise requirements” of his contract, in terms of responding to the domestic violence allegations made against former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith, according to the summary of investigative findings released on Aug. 22. Meyer was docked two separate payments of $285,253.84 as a result of his suspension. read more
