During the first set, following “Frequencies Peace 2” which jammed through to “Frequencies Peace 3,” the group kicked off a non-stop jam sequence to the end, which housed the third live performance of “Enceladus,” a new song that was debuted at The Pageant in St. Louis exactly a week prior. For the second set, the band was still vibing high, throwing in a cover of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “The Next Episode” off The Chronic 2001, originally sampled from David McCallum’s “The Edge,” as a nod to the holiday. Following this, after “Hidden Hand, Hidden Fist” another special surprise was in store. Victor Wooten, the renowned bassist from Béla Fleck and the Flectones and the Victor Wooten Trio, emerged for the song “Grow,” during which STS9’s resident bass virtuoso, Alana Rocklin, threw down in a wicked bass battle. Gov’t Mule Welcomes Jim James For “Us And Them” At Christmas Jam ‘Dark Side Of The Mule’ Set [Video/Full Audio]

first_imgWarren Haynes and Gov’t Mule are back in Asheville, North Carolina this weekend for the 30th edition of the prolific guitarist’s annual star-studded Christmas Jam. This year’s weekend event got moving with a pre-jam concert at the Orange Peel on Thursday night, which included notable appearances from Jimmy Vivino to Marco Benevento. Friday evening saw Haynes and other scheduled performers including Grace Potter, Jamey Johnson, Benevento, and Mike Gordon all move over to the larger U.S. Cellular Center to begin the main event. It was there on Friday where Gov’t Mule once again transformed into their Pink Floyd-themed Dark Side of the Mule, which sw Warren and his bandmates spend the entire set covering the famous psychedelic rock pioneers. The show began with “Pigs On The Wing Pt. I” from Pink Floyd’s 1977 Animals LP, which included a wonderfully hazy ending solo from Haynes. From there, they transitioned into a pair of tunes from 1975’s Wish You Were Here with “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part I” and “Have A Cigar”. Next, they moved into the sound effects-driven “Speak To Me” from their psychedelic masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon, which of course went right into the album’s dreamy “Breathe (In The Air)”, “On The Run”, “Time”, “The Great Gig in the Sky”, and “Money”. From there, the band moved into climactic Dark Side ballad “Us And Them”, which saw them welcome My Morning Jacket‘s Jim James to the stage to help out on vocal duties.Dark Side of the Mule with Jim James – “Us And Them” – 12/7/2018[Video: Gregory Marcus]The night continued with “Any Colour You Like” before the band took a break from Dark Side and transitioned into an eerily fun rendition of “Welcome To The Machine”. The latter half of the set also included “One Of These Days” and “Fearless” as well as part one of “Echoes” from 1971’s Meddle, before closing out with “Comfortably Numb”. The band would finally return to the stage for a one-song encore of “Wish You Were Here”. You can stream a full audience recording of Friday night’s Dark Side of the Mule set below.Dark Side of the Mule – Christmas Jam – 12/7/2018 – Full Audio[Audio: Z-man]Night two of Christmas Jam will take place on Saturday night with sets from Gov’t Mule, Jim James, Dave Grohl and “Friends” performing PLAY, Eric Church, and Joe Bonamassa. Evslin to lead governor’s new Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery

Evslin to lead governor’s new Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery

first_imgGovernor Jim Douglas has announced the creation of the Office of Economic Stimulus and Recovery (ESR) to coordinate the State s use of federal funds authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.   The Governor has tapped former Vermont Transportation Secretary and high tech entrepreneur Tom Evslin to head the Office as Chief Recovery Officer. The Office will be located in the Agency of Administration and report to Administration Secretary Neale Lunderville. The Vermont Federal Recovery Office, which was established in January before the recovery bill became law, has been fully incorporated into ESR.  Jim Bush will continue to serve in a leadership role as Director of Physical Infrastructure, responsible for oversight and delivery of the nearly $200 million in new state and local infrastructure projects. The scope of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act extends beyond the original intent of Medicaid and transportation funds, said Governor Douglas.  In turn, we have expanded the Federal Recovery Office into the Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery to ensure the federal money flows into our economy quickly and with strict accountability measures in place. The Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery will assist and coordinate efforts of State, community and private organizations to obtain funds for projects that not only alleviate the pain of the current recession but build the infrastructure necessary for Vermonters to succeed in the second decade of the 21st century. The Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery will work at entrepreneurial speed to make certain Vermont obtains all possible funds and gets maximum effect from tight coordination between programs, said Evslin. As much as possible, we need to use new technology to preserve Vermont values while building the foundation for a strong economy that can compete in a changing world.Accountability and transparency are key elements of the newly constituted Office. Working with Auditor of Accounts Tom Salmon, the Office will appoint a Director of Accountability from the Auditor s staff to assure that federally funded projects are designed from the beginning to meet stringent requirements for audit and accountability.  The Director will serve as a direct link between the Auditor s Office and Office of Economic Stimulus & Recovery.  This important partnership is essential to ensure that Vermont exceeds the new federal standards for transparency, accountability and effectiveness, said Auditor Salmon. We want to ensure compliance and accountability right out of the gates.Evslin has agreed to lead the Office working at minimum wage and has volunteered to return his entire salary to state coffers. I m thrilled and honored for the opportunity to help advance Vermont and position us for a strong economic recovery, Evslin continued. The Office will be staffed by existing state employees on temporary assignment from agencies and departments. In addition to a Director of Physical Infrastructure and a Director of Accountability, the Office will include staff resources for Network Infrastructure, State Programs, Planning, and Community Partnerships.Tom Evslin BioTom Evslin was Secretary of the Agency of Transportation under former Vermont Governor Richard Snelling, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Colleges, and is currently vice-chair of The Snelling Center, a non-profit dedicated to good governance in Vermont. Evslin s civic career began as town moderator in Worcester, Vermont in the 1970s.Evslin ran a software business in Vermont for many years before going to work for Microsoft, where he was responsible for communication products.  Evslin went on to work at AT&T where he founded their first Internet business, WorldNet. In 1997 Tom and his wife, Mary Evslin, founded ITXC which was a pioneer in the use of the Internet for phone calls.  The company grew to be one of the world s largest wholesale carriers of international calls. The company went public in 1999 and is now part of Indian telecommunications giant Tata Communications. Mary Evslin was the founding chair of the Vermont Telecommunications Authority. The Evslins live in Stowe, Vermont.Source: Dennise R. Casey, Governor Douglas s Deputy Chief of Staff, March 2, 2009last_img read more

Harris shattered a glass ceiling, but she’ll still be held to a higher standard

Harris shattered a glass ceiling, but she’ll still be held to a higher standard

first_imgTOP COMMENTSQUOTATION“There is a mysterious cycle in human events. To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.”          ~~Franklin D Roosevelt, June 27, 1936TWEET OF THE DAY BLAST FROM THE PAST- Advertisement – At Daily Kos on this date in 2008—Republican “Permanent Majority” Lasts Less Than One Presidency:A few years ago, Republican strategists were crowing about a new “permanent Republican majority”. As of last night, Republicans are a regional party with a narrowly defined ideology and abysmal support among the next generations of voters. And all it took was, you know, Republicans sucking on every conceivable level, dragging the nation into botched war efforts, corruption in the Department of Justice, and the possible collapse of our entire financial system. So… yay us, I guess. When Barack Obama was in the White House, many on both the left and the right cited the first Black president as proof that the nation had progressed significantly on racial issues. But that notion was washed away by the election of Trump, which showed that Obama’s presidency had been an aberration, not evidence of an inclusive new norm.Likewise, commentators will be tempted to Obama-ize Harris and characterize her vice presidency as evidence that women of color have arrived in a new position of power. While the political muscle of Black women is a real thing, Harris’s victory doesn’t erase the hurdles that Black women face on a regular basis. No one should forget how much sexism and racism—the combination known as misogynoir—Harris has confronted, or the unrelenting misinformation campaigns waged against her on her path to the vice presidency. No one should forget that even though the Biden-Harris pairing was ultimately victorious, millions of people voted for a president who gleefully belittled and insulted not only Harris but other high-profile women of color. No one should forget that because of ingrained stereotypes about Black women, Harris will have to tread more carefully than Biden did in the nation’s second-highest office.
