Trojans to embark on final road trip

Trojans to embark on final road trip

first_imgThe players on the USC baseball team are just like your average student. And like any student, they seem to enjoy not having school.Over spring break, the Trojans (20-27, 10-11) snapped an eight-game losing streak and went 5-2. Lastweekend, after not having played for 10 days because of finals, the squad took two of three from No. 6 Arizona State to break out of a six-game slide.Leading the way · Junior pitcher Andrew Triggs looks to get USC off on the right foot in the first game of a three-game set against the Beavers. – Dieuwertje Kast | Daily Trojan USC gets another top-10 team on their slate this weekend with No. 2 Oregon State. It’s the Trojans third series of the season against a top-10 team, but the Beavers (37-12, 16-5) are different than the Sun Devils and USC’s other top-10 opponent, No. 7 Cal State Fullerton. The Titans started the season at No. 8 and Arizona State started at No. 11. The Beavers were expected to finish seventh in the Pac-10 and were under the radar. But the results don’t lie. The Beavers haven’t lost a series all season, haven’t lost three consecutive games and have run off a pair of double-digit win streaks (11 and 12 games).“They’ve got some older guys; some good experience,” said USC interim coach Frank Cruz. “They’ve gelled together real well. And they can flat out pitch.”The Beavers are second in the conference with a 2.90 ERA and a .238 opponents’ batting average. Left-handed pitcher Josh Osich tossed a no-hitter against No. 24 UCLA on April 30, but he’s not even the ace of the staff. That title goes to right-handed pitcher Sam Gaviglio. The junior is a top-100 prospect with a 10-1 record and a 1.74 ERA. His WHIP is 1.03, and he has fanned 90 hitters while issuing just 21 walks. Perhaps most impressive is that he averages more than seven innings pitched per start. But the Trojans are no slouch on the hill either. Junior right-hander Andrew Triggs and senior Logan Odom are each coming off complete game performances against the Sun Devils. Triggs will take the mound on Friday, presumably against Gaviglio, while Odom will round out the rotation on Sunday in the series finale.Sandwiched in the middle on Saturday is junior Austin Wood. The former fourth-round draft pick hasn’t had the season he or the Trojans has hoped for, with a 4-6 record and 5.48 ERA. But the righty went seven strong innings against Arizona State last Saturday, and looks to build on that in Corvallis this weekend.Indeed, the team as a whole is looking to build on their performance last weekend and carry the momentum to the road. The Trojans are an abysmal 5-13 away from Dedeaux Field this season, including 3-6 on the road in conference play.“Going on the road is a chore [for us],” Cruz said. “Add in the No. 2 team in the country; we’re gonna have to be just about perfect.”Although the Trojans will face tough pitching this weekend, the coaching staff believes they are more than capable of challenging the Beavers and nabbing another Pac-10 series win.“The only upsets in this conference are the teams on the losing end,” Cruz said. “They’re the ones upset. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day, and I don’t mean that as a cliché. That’s just the facts.”last_img read more

Bombers shot down in Okanagan

first_imgThe L.V. Rogers Bombers felt what it was like to be kicked around as the Kootenay squad struggled mightily at the Fulton Maroons High School Boy’s Basketball Tournament this past weekend in Vernon. The shorthanded Bombers were outscored by a 2-to-1 margin in three games against Okanagan AA competition.“It definitely was a tough weekend,” said Bomber coach Jeremy Phelan.“But on the positive side, it was nice to see our senior players be vocal on the court and lead by example.”Phelan, a Bomber grad and part of the two-time provincial champion team from LVR and Trafalgar, was talking about seniors Bjorn Morris, Tobin Eberle and Ethan Perkins. All three Bombers worked from tip-off to buzzer despite being shelled by stronger Okanagan teams. Against host Fulton, LVR lost 97-66.Perkins finished with 16 points while Morris added 15.Perkins, finishing with 12 points, continued his strong play during a shellacking at the hands of Kalamalka Lakers, 88-32.In the final game, against Sahali of Kamloops, the Bombers lost 89-51.Perkins again had 16 points to lead the Bombers.LVR played the tournament without a full roster as sickness and player commitments depleted the squad heading to the Okanagan. The Bombers get right back on the horse this weekend as the club travels to Golden to compete in the Kicking Horse Classic.LVR is slotted into a pool with Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Wild and Selkirk Storm of Kimberley. The final is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.last_img read more

2010 Winter Olympics iPhone Apps

2010 Winter Olympics iPhone Apps

first_imgOther Mobile Olympics Apps Although the iPhone is the leading mobile apps platform for Olympics coverage, you don’t necessarily need to have an iPhone to join in on the action. A good example is Foursquare’s partnership with the New York Times, to provide reviews of local venues and offer new badges for those in the area. You’ll be able to do all of the usual Foursquare things with your iPhone or any other smartphone, but in addition enjoy restaurant reviews and tips from the writers of the New York Times. That app can be found here.Let us know in the comments if you have a favorite Olympics iPhone (or other phone) app! iPhone applications are no longer just toys for techies. There are now thousands of iPhone apps in the App Store designed for mainstream usage. Yesterday we looked at examples of health and fitness iPhone apps, today we check out what’s available for a current big sporting event: the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. There were relatively slim pickings, but at least one Winter Olympics app that is a must-have for sports fans! The Official AppsThe official 2010 Olympics app goes by the unwieldy title of 2010Guide – Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games: The Official Mobile Spectator Guide. The app is free and is described as “a location-aware schedule” for more than 2,000 sport and cultural events between 12-28 February, 2010. It lets you create a personalized itinerary, with the help of maps to over 80 venues. It features real-time results for every sport, news headlines, photos and twitter streams. For users actually attending the Olympics, the apps tells you ‘what’s on now’ close to your current location – which is a nice geo-location touch. Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tags:#Apple#mobile#NYT#Real World#web Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Related Posts center_img You may also want to check out the iPhone apps of Olympic broadcasters CTV and NBC. One nice feature of the NBC app is the ability to follow athletes on Twitter and Facebook. However, according to Chad Skelton of The Vancouver Sun, the official guide app is “head and shoulders above the other two.”The Unofficial AppsThere aren’t a great deal of unofficial Olympics iPhone apps. However, one that might come in handy for TV watchers is Olympic Games and Sports Rules and Records by SportLogik. It lists the rules, a glossary of terms and the equipment used for over 70 sports. It also boasts “complete Olympic records for every Summer and Winter Olympic game ever held.” It’s literally a font of all knowledge for the Winter Olympics, although it’s text-heavy and not very exciting.Of course there are some Olympics-themed gaming apps for iPhone. A good example is Ski Jump Lite (there’s also a premium version). What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … richard macmanus The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Why Fast Is Slow

Why Fast Is Slow

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now If you want to win business faster, you need to slow down. The more you rush your buyer, the more they feel that the deal you want is about your gain—not what is most important to them.Going too fast in discovery can cause the contacts you are calling on to feel as if what they are saying isn’t important to you, that you don’t really care, and that you aren’t going to take their real needs into consideration.Rushing through the process and foregoing the consensus-building necessary for your dream client to get the internal “yes” from their team prevents them from giving you the “yes,” that means you won the business. There aren’t a lot of great reasons to rush to a solution. A couple of extra hours deepening your understanding allows you to build better solutions, and solutions your prospective client can agree to buy. A lack of time invested here slows the process. One of the single worst attempts to speed up the sales process is to present a proposal and pricing before you have built the value and before you’ve built a preference for you and your solution. You aren’t speeding towards a “yes.” You are speeding straight into a dead end.A sales process and the buyer’s process have one important fact in common: they’re both a series of conversations and commitments.Skipping the needed conversations in an attempt to get to a close faster will only get you to “no” faster. When you avoid asking for some of the commitments you and your dream client need to make together, you not only slow the process, you make it exceedingly more likely that they won’t buy from you.A fundamental underinvestment of time with your dream client will actually increase the time it takes to win deals, if you can win them at all, having failed to develop the relationships, and having failed to create enough value to be preferred. These are some of the reasons why fast is slow and slow is fast. Slow is also a better strategy for winning, and it’s a better way to compress your sales cycle when fast means shoddy work, poor relationships, too little value creation, and skipping the necessary conversations and commitments.last_img read more
