Calls made to abolish air tax

According to councillor McCarthy, “Whether this is a manufactured excuse for withdrawing services or not, the airline has clearly said it will reverse its decision to axe services and jobs if the tax is abolished. I believe that the benefits for the economy in having these services retained at Shannon and Dublin far outweigh the benefits associated with keeping this tax in place.”The Shannon-based public representative said the Government must now immediately clarify whether it intends to remove or at least reduce the tax.“It is incumbent on Government to explain to the Irish public to what extent the air travel tax is more beneficial to the economy than the significant jobs and revenue generated by the Ryanair services in question. If the Government cannot justify this tax then it should be held accountable for the loss of these jobs,” added councillor McCarthy.center_img Linkedin Email Facebook Twitterlast_img read more

Vermont strengthens captive insurance law, allows incorporated protected cells

first_imgLegislation passed by the 2011 session of the Vermont Legislature and signed into law by Governor Peter Shumlin expands Vermont’s captive laws, to include allowing cells within a sponsored cell captive to be formed as incorporated protected cells.  The bill was signed into law before a group of industry supporters on May 11. ‘This bill is testimony to our commitment to keep pace with the changing needs of this industry,’ said Governor Peter Shumlin.  ‘I commend the Legislature for their hard work and commitment to keeping Vermont ‘the gold standard’ for captive domiciles.’Another change in the new captive insurance law creates greater flexibility within cell structures on business written by a sponsored captive and who can own a sponsored captive. ‘These updates will allow more companies to domicile in Vermont and utilize the option of having incorporated cells.  This is accomplished without limiting any rights or protections afforded by cells created by contract,’ said David Provost, Deputy Commissioner of Vermont’s Captive Insurance Division.‘Cell owners will now have more options,’ said Dan Towle, Director of Financial Services.  ‘Vermont will continue to license quality companies that may be sponsors of cell structures as long as they meet our regulatory requirements.  The new law offers greater flexibility in their structures and ownership.’  Vermont currently has 18 sponsored cell captives with over 100 individual cells. The bill also makes permanent the elimination of the first year minimum tax of $7,500 for newly licensed captives. ‘It was a way for the Legislature and Governor to say thank you to an industry that has been so beneficial to Vermont,’ said Richard Smith, President of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association (VCIA).  The VCIA was a strong supporter of this legislation and was a partner with the State in its passage. After a strong 2010 with the licensing of its 900th captive insurance company, the State of Vermont enacted these changes to the Captive Insurance law in the Legislature as part of its annual enhancements to its captive statute, according to the Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration (BISHCA).Vermont is off to its strongest start in years with nine captives licensed thus far with five applications in progress.  Vermont is the largest captive insurance domicile in the U.S. and the third largest in the world, with $25 billion in gross written premium in 2010.  Vermont is also home to captives formed by 42 of the companies that make up the Fortune 100, and 18 of the companies that make up the Dow 30 have Vermont captives.Get to Know Captive InsuranceCaptive insurance is a regulated form of self insurance that has been around since the 1960’s, and has been a part of the Vermont insurance industry since 1981, when Vermont passed the Special Insurer Act.  Captive insurance companies are formed by companies or groups of companies as a form of alternative insurance to better manage their own risk. Captives are typically used for corporate lines of insurance such as property, general liability, products liability, or professional liability. Growth sectors of the captive insurance industry include securitization, professional medical malpractice coverage for doctors and hospitals, and the continued trend of small and mid-sized companies forming captive insurance companies.A sponsored captive is a structure created by a sponsor (typically an insurance company or other financial institution) to house individual insurance arrangements called ‘cells.’ Each cell is created by the insured party, who is usually a customer of the sponsor, to insure its own risk.  Such programs are ideal for insured who want to explore the use of a captive without starting their own or to address a short-term insurance issue (captives are considered long-term solutions to long-term issues).  In many cases, they serve as incubator space for new captive insurance companies, as the cell owner discovers the benefits of creating their own captive. An incorporated protected cell is a cell of a sponsored captive that is created under Vermont’s corporation laws as a true corporation, as opposed to a cell that is created by contract. Montpelier, VT–May 19, 2011. Fee cuts pull call centre investors

Fee cuts pull call centre investors

first_img7 September 2007The offer of discounted telecommunications prices has lured three foreign call centre companies to commit to investments worth around R400-million that will create up to 10 000 new jobs in South Africa, Business Day reported this week.Department of Trade and Industry director-general Lionel October told Business Day that one of the three unnamed firms – two European and one US-based – would be setting up an operation running to a few thousand seats, while the other two would set up 500- to 600-seat centres.According to Business Day, the government had finally, after months of negotiations, reached agreement with state telecoms company Telkom on a “developmental pricing model” for the country’s business process outsourcing (BPO) sector – although Telkom had not released details of the agreement.Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said in March that South Africa was looking to its BPO sector to help drive economic growth, and would be offering investors incentives in the form of start-up and expansion grants and reduced telecommunication fees.BPO involves relocating certain business processes that are usually performed in-house by a company to a third party service provider, such as customer care or call centres, to carry out the services on behalf of the concerned company.Traditionally, countries such as India and the Philippines have led the way in servicing markets for the United States and Britain, among other countries. South Africa is quickly catching up, however, thanks to a range of factors working in its favour.South Africa is mainly targeting clients from the UK, Europe and the US due to closer cultural ties, use of the English language and, in the case of Europe, being in a similar time zone.BPO is considered a key sector under the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (Asgi-SA), which seeks to achieve an annual economic growth rate of 6% between 2010 and 2014, in order to halve poverty and unemployment by 2014.Mpahlwa said in March that the sector had the potential to create up to 25 000 direct and 75 000 indirect jobs, and contribute about R7.95-billion to the country’s economy, by 2009.“In the first six months of 2006, South Africa created 3 000 jobs in this sector. Based on this evidence, we are of the view that we should achieve our targets of 100 000 new jobs by 2010,” he said.SouthAfrica.info reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Facebook Tinkers With Comments To Get Users To Talk To Each Other

Facebook Tinkers With Comments To Get Users To Talk To Each Other

first_imgFacebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Related Posts taylor hatmaker Tags:#Facebook#social networks#Social Web Despite all the refinements Facebook has forced on its change-phobic user base over the years, the social network’s commenting system hasn’t gotten a lot of updates. That’s finally changing as the company tests rated comments – promoted with Likes – and nested replies with a small test batch of users. (Facebook is also toying with a new notification “ding” to boost engagement – we can almost hear the backlash now).  Commenting Is A Shouting MatchThe tweaks, engineered to boost enagagement, should be a boon for Facebook’s one billion plus users as well as the brands that try to reach them. For brands in particular, Facebook comments are a total mess. Say you’ve got a few thousand followers. You post something that riles them up and you’ve got a deluge of comments rolling in. Suddenly it’s a conversation, right? Not exactly. There may be 200 comments on your latest post, but each one is the equivalent of a someone walking up and stapling their thoughts onto a telephone pole.Tenacious engagers might cruise back around or even wade into the comment pool and tag users by name to reply, but it’s mostly just a tangle of people shouting over each other in chronological order. Popular comments might attract a lot of likes, but they don’t move up or down the totem pole or get called out in any way. Likes Get A Bigger RoleAs the screenshot shows, the new commenting system adds a one-layer-deep level of replies. Users can respond to a comment on the original post, but (thankfully) won’t be able to reply to a reply. This basic improvement should help clear up the confusion about who is talking to whom in an ongoing Facebook comment thread. Better yet, comments that garner a bunch of likes will rise to the top, highlighting more interesting or on-point comments.Of course, many sites already provide some kind of yea-or-nay feedback system that encourages quality content to rise to the top, user-generated or otherwise. Google introduced the +1 to its social search results. The painstakingly tuned commenting systems on sites like Gawker mercifully let readers downvote stupid comments into oblivion. Buzzfeed’s social curation offers a veritable viral buffet, with buttons encouraging users to LOL or OMG (WTF).Facebook’s Like button has been many things to many users since the company first introduced it in 2009. Now, Likes look poised to evolve into a less dynamic version of Reddit’s upvotes, the social ranking machine that makes the latter site go ’round – and keeps its users coming back for more. Facebook is no doubt hoping its new system will do the same.center_img Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Auditlast_img read more

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)New York Knicks fans are not happy. The franchise, unfortunately slotted with the fourth pick (despite having the second-worst record in the league) in this year’s NBA Draft, chose Latvian center Kristaps Porzingis over former college stars like Justise Winslow, Frank Kaminsky and Stanley Johnson. The decision, which certainly may not turn out to be the wrong one in the long run, was met with a chorus of boos at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. One young fan was beside himself when he heard the news.Porzingis is just 19, so he may need a year or two to develop into a quality NBA player. It doesn’t look like Knicks fans are going to be patient heading into it all.last_img read more
